Just watched the game again, and Jordan Travis killed us on 3rd down with a bunch of passes over the middle. If we can shut down the middle of the field, it should be a long night for the Noles. Hopefully having Perkins in the middle will help. It sure as hell can’t hurt.

Secondary needs to play big. Noles havegood wideouts. Want to see Daniel's turn it loose.

That and they converted on a bunch of 3rd/4th and longs. Was frustrating as hell...and LSU was SO close on making a play under those circumstances, but just couldn't make it happen. I legit feel like Florida State has no idea what's waiting for them.

I mean, we were a brand new, not even fully complete team, with new HC and coordinators and a ton of transfers. "Exploited" is a bit of a stretch when you consider where we were at the beginning of 2021.

That is what was so frustrating about that game. We would win 1st and 2nd downs but allow them to continually pick up third and long. I was listening to a few FSU podcast just to see what the enemy is saying And I heard a guy say that they like the match of of Perkins versus Travis, if Perkins is the spy. I laughed. Travis is faster than Brice Young but I still feel comfortable with Perkins doing Travis like Young. He constantly made Young rush his throws and harassed him the entire game.

Both Kelly and House had said that third down defense was a big area that has to improve. I didn’t like how much cushion we gave up on the underneath routes especially earlier in the season. We need our linebackers to get in the passing lanes. That should improve with Omar and Perkins. I loved Mike Jones but he just didn’t seem comfortable at all in the middle and Penn has lost a lot of weight and should be more mobile.

Jordan Travis is a baller and Johnny Wilson makes him even better. This game will be a shoot out if the defense doesn’t contain

Several blown coverages on scrambles and a flea flicker was the difference

Everyone was frustrated, but you could tell it was the first game playing a very different scheme. We were vanilla and played soft coverage all day. They just took what we gave them, but it did limit the number of big plays.

I know the CBs are new, but we do have a lot of returning experience at LB, Safety and Nickel. That, and the system is established and all of the other returning players should know the calls and where to be. Because of this, I don’t think the staff will approach this game the same way as last season. They will disguise coverages and try to apply more pressure.

The defensive scheme looking more like what we saw against Bama will be an improvement, but it won’t guarantee success. We all know FSU has a great QB and weapons at WR. I’m really looking forward to watching it.

This is an important point, as well. A lot of pieces moved around on defense after the FSU game. Perkins hardly played. The LB, Nickel and Safety depth charts changed quite a bit over the season, as well. And once Smith went down, we had very little depth on the DL. CB is a question mark, but all of these areas have improved over where we were in game 1 last season.

It’s like the game wasn’t close, a one point game. That LSU going into an overtime, could have won. If you want to observe something, look at the difference in lineups, that game, and what started in the bowl game.

That doesn’t change the fact that they torched our defense over the middle of the field. What word would you prefer me to use? The circumstances don’t really matter at this point. What matters is that we shut down the middle, because their team is basically the same, and pretty much our entire secondary is new.

They have a very good QB. Good QBs convert a lot of third downs and they can exploit the middle.

I seriously doubt that. Bryce didn’t scramble often but he has some serious wheels

No one has explained how the hell the defense is going to stop Johnny Wilson

Just to play devil’s advocate - I feel like Perkins is still a pretty unknown commodity as MLB. We know he has all the athletic ability in the world but I’m not sure how we can have a ton of confidence yet that he will be better in coverage than Mike Jones. For that matter, I’m not even sure we really know how Matt House plans to use him other than the fact that he will physically be lined up in the middle.

That’s how I feel about the entire back 7 of the defense TBH. I think they could be good or even great (barring injuries in the secondary) but I think they could also turn out to be the weakness of our team. Until we see the defense in action, it’s a reasonable concern IMHO. Travis is a good quarterback and can make plays when they’re behind the sticks. We need to put pressure on him, and losing Maason for the week certainly doesn’t help.

I agree. listened to the Jeff Cameron show, and yea it’s a noles podcast so obviously talking up their team, but they think they’re going to crush LSU. Of course they’re going to say they’ll win but with Maason out they’re penciling in a blowout. Wildly delusional

This secondary isn’t shutting anything down let’s be honest. Just need to play average and have JD light it up.

Yes they do. We were not the same team against FSU as we were later in the year. The results of that game do not matter at all when looking at this game.

We threw for like 30 yards in the 1st half last year. I doubt it will be like that this year. At least I really hope it’s not

We still have brand new DE’s, brand new LB’s, and brand new DB’s. It’s not the same team, but it’s just as inexperienced playing together as last year’s defense.

Plus, my whole point was that FSU exploited the middle of the field. If our defense doesn’t put a stop to it this year, last year’s circumstances don’t matter. This is not a controversial take.
