Brent Venables is an outlier man. That very rarely works out like that. All of the top programs have regular turnover. That means the guy you have is doing a great job.

Or (no I’m not advocating for it) , but for an unforeseen reason O is gone in a couple of years. Then Freeman is promoted to HC. It’s possible.

You can't get stability from the coordinators staging long term.

Seems to not be much of a problem at Alabama.

Dude...I didn't say I didn't want him. I just simply asked a question about Mason. I don't know if they are equal or if Mason sucks. I am not against Freeman in any way....I was hoping someone might give some evaluation of Mason....because Freeman just might not want to coach LSU. He turned down Mich State DC job.
Of course, not a single person said anything about Mason's abilities, even though my understanding is that he is interviewing.

Orgeron needs to focus on one year at a time

The more we focus on hiring guys who stay long term, the more we get guys like Pelini.

At LSU it is best for every coordinator to leave after two or three years max. After that you will eventually become the villain and everyone will say “the game has passed him by” “the message has gone stale” and “he doesn’t relate to the players anymore”

John Brady was at LSU one year and that resulted in a national title, he was so good. You go with the best coaches. Saban has elite coaches as well that move on.

If Freeman helps bring us a championship in a few years, I’ll support him going on to HC gig!

I want the best coach available, period. If LSU ends up being a consistent spring board to the NFL and/or HC positions for our coordinators, then we will just keep attracting good coaches. Akin to recruiting players who have NFL aspirations.

I see your point and don’t disagree, but I just don’t see how we could pass on Freeman. And I think Mason would be a lame duck hire.

So what’s your point? We should aspire to get mediocre coaches to work for Orgeron?

In my opinion I’d rather have ambitious hires that feel like they have to prove themselves for the next level. That way we are always in line for marquee (young) hires

Hire the best, then if they leave, hire the best again.

It’s not complicated.

Your probably not worth a crap if nobody wants your coordinators. So I hope we can snag the guy.

Stanford's defense got better after he left.

Vanderbilt's defense got worse when he got there.

"Good D coach" my fricking arse.

Ask yourself whether Freeman or Mason have more recent DC experience.

The hire is the answer to that question for every candidate compared to Mason.

Guys like Venables are not the norm and impossible to predict. Generally speaking, if you have a good coordinator, he's probably going to get attention for HC jobs and not be around long-term. That's just the nature of coaching. If you want "stablility," you're generally left with older retreads. We've tried those plenty here.
