Former Tiger golfer John Peterson may be done with golf

: John Peterson is giving himself two more tournaments—this week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic and the Travelers Championship—to make roughly $100,000 in prize money. (He gets those two starts via a medical exemption for a bone issue in his hand that first started bothering him in 2015.) If he makes the money, he keeps at least some status on the PGA Tour.
If he doesn’t? That’s it. Done. Retirement. At the age of 29, when most golfers are beginning to hit their prime.
“I just haven’t liked professional golf,” Peterson says.

And when sponsors avoid you because you are overly political on social media.
He posted anti-gay marriage stuff on instagram and facebook when it was legalized. I don't care how you feel, you keep it to yourself if your livelihood is reliant on sponsors. So dumb.

Yeah....he said he’s going to get into Real estate in FW

Yeah he did.
He would still like to keep playing golf, but he doesn't have the drive to work every day and he won't make any income unless he starts winning. The sponsors will avoid him unless he's a top tier player.

You can't afford all the traveling that comes with it if you don't bring any money in, plus no sponsors to help.

In 2017 the cutoff for retaining your tour card as a top 125 money list leader, was $797,385...
Peterson is at $79,458 (204th)this year with one tourney to play... So he needs to make $717,927 at the St. Jude.
Last year, two players tied for 2nd and only made $563,200. So he is going to have to win or have a solo second this weekend.

were they trying to paint him as a sympathetic figure in that article? It didn't work if so.

Yeah I’ve been pretty surprised to say the least at some of the stuff he’s posted on social media as a professional golfer.

Not to get into a political discussion, because God knows this isn't the place... but what is the difference in him expressing his thoughts and someone like Lebron expressing his? We are led to believe that LeBron is rightfully able to be a spokesperson for causes and shouldn't just "shut up and dribble." He didn't lose any sponsors... Peterson however gets negative treatment for his differing expression. Now obviously I'm not saying that Peterson and Lebron are on the same wavelength of talent or marketability... but you get my hypothetical.

LeBron doesn’t post hateful shite. You have to think about backlash against any company that signs someone that posts anti-gay stuff on their social media. No one is willing to get dragged through the mud for someone like that.

If you are “giving yourself” 2 events to make the money, then you don’t really want to be out there. Nothing wrong with that. He has other interests now. I get that but just retire and be done with it. NCAA champ and great run at the PGA. Things many of us only dream about. Best of luck in the future

But that is part of the difference. The higher the return a company will get on its marketing buck the more they will put up with.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but..

Ok so he has two tourneys... so he still needs top 10s, and he has only done that once since turning pro.

Hateful is someone's opinion. If you agree with Peterson's political and religious views... then you wouldn't find what he said hateful.

Actually, to make $100k in 2 events he probably needs to finish around T40 in both. The article suggests he needs a good bit less than you are assuming to keep status, probably because of the medical exemption.

That's very possible I assume. Either way, he needs to have two pretty damn good weeks.
