a playoff would kill the regular season, look at our beloved #5 LSU.

Option 1: We have a shot to make the Sugar Bowl unless everyones wheels fall off of the wagon then we MIGHT get a shot at the title, but we have absolutely NO CONTROL OF OUR OWN DESTINY.

Option 2: We have clenched a spot in the playoffs and will be playing Nebraska in Tiger Stadium in 4 weeks for the first round of the playoffs. Also, if we play well, we have a chance to be crowned as NATIONAL CHAMPIONS.

...I take option two every time. The season would be way more exciting because we control our own destiny. Instead of having to root against TCU, Boise, Oregon, and Auburn, we could relentlessly cheer for the Tigers alone with confidence that WE CONTROL OUR OWN DESTINY..

I cannot comprehend the lack of logic that goes into the BCS System, and I hope a playoff is put in play in the near future, regardless of the greedy bastards who are trying to prevent it.

we controlled our own destiny. we lost. why should auburn possibly have to beat us twice to win it all? i bet you would not be saying this if we were in auburn's situation.

The whole season is a sort of play off. We had our once chance and blew it. If you want to win a national titles, you rarely get more than 1 chance. A playoff would give everyone a second chance. If there was a playoff, we may have had a chance this year, but it could come back to bite us other years. In the end it will all average out.

Making the next two weeks completely irrelevant, eh?

this is what makes me nervous about a playoff system. It would de-value the regular season, which is the most amazing in all of sports IMO FWIW

ETA: I can get behind a 4 team playoff though

A playoff would legitimize the national championship. Until there is a playoff there will always be excuses.

Example: 2003- split championship.
2007- Lucky.

..I would prefer a legit national champ, so that no one can argue that a system was manipulated

Not exactly. (home field advantage determined by rankings, SEC Champ (in other years)) Highschool teams have a playoff and they still play hard for the last few weeks.

Now our players have no control of where they end up. A computer does. We have to pray that Oregon, Boise, and Auburn all choke.

Or just accept that this wasn't our year.

I don't understand why we can't have the best of both worlds. An eight team playoff: 6 conference champions plus the 2 highest rated BCS teams. How could this not maintain interest in the regular season, and provide a true champion? Not perfect, but much better than what we have now.

Would be cool, but how is it any more fair or legit to have the the Big East champ in the playoff this year (Pitt? WVU?)? Some team will always be left out and bitching no matter the playoff format. And regular season games will always mean less with a playoff.

I don't think I would be for a 16 team playoff, but an 8 team playoff would NOT diminish the regular season. 1-loss could easily drop you out of the top 8 at the end of the season, thus this whole "makes the regular season irrelevant" argument is in fact irrelevant.

It might actually make it more exciting, considering that pretty much the top 12-15 teams would still be vying for a chance at a national title well into November, instead of 4 or 5 teams.

While I would still love college football and would enjoy it, I'm not so hung up on a playoff. I enjoy the current format. Its different, and yes the regular season is undeniably more intense because of it.

And frankly, the BCS gets the champ right just as well as a playoff does.

6 conference champs 2 at large, highest rated plays lowest rated so the season will always matter.

There you go

I like the BCS ranking system. I think that it should be used in placing teams in an 8 team playoff.

I would rather the argument be between the 8th and 9th ranked team getting into the playoffs compared to the 2nd and 3rd ranked team arguing on how should be in the title game.

You sure about that?

Maybe you forgot about Auburn not getting a chance in '04 after being undefeated in the SEC, while Oklahoma got manhandled.
