1890's maybe. LSU has been using the Canary Yellow/Gold since the late 50's. I've been going to games since the 1960's and it's been the Canary Yellow since then, with only minor shade differences.
Don't know how the official school colors came to be called Royal Purple and Old Gold, because LSU got its original colors during Mardi Gras (Search Tulane -LSU original football game) and the MG shade of gold is the Canary Yellow that LSU uses.

They look brighter now then they once did. Used to look dingy. The yellow works in it's present incarnation.

Chicken, you are correct about the color gold in the 70's and 80's. It was closer to the GBFTL coat color.

Chicken, why are you stirring the gold pot?
I like it just the way it is. It's been that color as long as I can remember, which is at least last week :)

I wouldnt want it to change. Would you have to change the rest of the colors on the uni? It would look terrible to not have matching pants and stripes on the jersey. With HD, our whites and yellow helmet look amazing on tv. They really pop.
Would i have to get a whole new wardrobe? What about TD? would you change the look to match the more gold color?

I liked them too, but not at the expense to change everything about LSU.

if our uniforms had black somewhere, that'd be nice.

I had Leonard Marshall's old Helmet from the '83 season once (until I left it sitting out in my room without locking the door
). It was a Kelly helmet that was painted on the inside so the battle scarring didn't deface the logo. The gold color was definitely more of a rich gold color than the current "banana yellow".
I'd love to see us keep the same helmet design, but move toward the "old gold" helmet color much like we did against Arkansas a couple years ago.

Is this because someone that knows nothing about football said "That's not gold, it's yellow."?

I also remember that starting in 1980 the facemasks changed from grey to the current purple.
Also, the letter decals seemed a bit more "blocky" prior to the '80 season.....They also allowed players to place merit tiger head decals on their helmets before '80.

All I've known is the canary yellow, so I wouldn't want to see a change.

And I'm generally a big traditionalist however, I dug that "Antique Gold" helmet.

The uniform shade of gold appears to have changed somewhat over the years but the current scheme of old gold/yellow (call it what you want) with 2 purple stripes and one white stripe should remain. This is pretty much the same combination on the pants. I have always looked at the helmets and the pants representing the color combination of a tiger and its stripes. Look at the fur of a tiger and you will see gold with white and dark stripes. Tigers surely do not look like Notre Dame or Army gold, or even the Pro Combat gold. We are the Tigers. Our uniforms are very unique and make us look like tigers.

Has my full support. We are purple and GOLD not purple and yellow.

Our band wears the official LSU color scheme. The deep purple and the old gold look, not metallic like ND. I personally love this color combination and that would be even more unique then the blue/canary combo we have developed over the years. Actually, Missouri went back to their old gold recently and it lokks a ton better than the yellow.

I like the color we have now. It's very close to the opposite of our purple and why our unis look so sharp IMO. Same with UF.

Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Army, Navy, colorodo, ucf, I'm sure there are others that aren't coming to mind, all have that metallic Gold.
I like that LSU is different
