its wild how shitty the NBA has become
I heard a theory from some former players who said that the hand-check rules really changed things, but that actually the refs not allowing 'rivalries' between players has ruined most of the entertainment value.
Now if a player even looks at a guy on the other team he gets a technical, and back in the day we had Bill Laimbeer fighting everybody and Latrell Sprewell choking people out.
So these normally-passionate guys play just subdued enough to get by during the regular season and make a paycheck. There are no more individual players going at each other like Bird vs Magic, Isaiah Thomas vs MJ, Kareem vs Wilt, etc.
Sports don't need to be sanitized so that Lebron and Steph can score 40, it sometimes needs those random heels showing up in our place and going after our favorite players.

He also has freakishly large hands, even for his size, making it impossible to shoot normally with backspin.
It can be done (see Wemby), but it's very hard. Try shooting a softball with good backspin every time. That's like Shaq with a basketball

I get the same feeling watching the NFL as I do the NBA for the most part. Ill think , "oh that match up sounds interesting", and ill put the game on only to find myself bored to death after ten minutes.
It probably doesnt help that I dont have a NBA or NFL team that I care about, but I still find both leagues just sanitized and boring.

quote:The difference between Shaq (especially early like in that clip) and every other 7 footer ever, is that Shaq is a bigger man.
During Shaqs whole career almost every team had MULTIPLE 7 footers.
Go look at highlights of all the rest, including nowadays. You can tell just looking at guys, they're long and lanky, or bulky (if they're heavy).
Not Shaq. He's built similarly to Jordan... but enlarged to 125%. The proportions, everything. If you saw a picture without context, you'd never imagine he was that large, you'd guess maybe 6'6, 250 or so. Because people just aren't that large.

Shaq has been my all time favorite basketball player since the first time i heard his team at LSU. Had his posters on my wall many times, sent my parents chasing for boxes of Classic bb cards his rookie year, always had him on my 2k teams, etc.
I remember this video well. He shook the pants off of MJ. Lol.

Dude, it has never occurred to me that Arvydas Sabonis is Domantas Sabonis' dad (I'm an idiot).
Mind blown!

I had a class with Shaq. I didn’t miss a home game at LSU for seven years. I loved the Bird through Kobe era of the NBA. Those guys were so freaking good. A team like Phoenix that never broke through along with Indy and New York and Portland etc- so many great tier 2 teams that were great to watch- not just Chicago and LA and Detroit and Boston.
That said, in 96 I discovered the NHL and really took to the sports ethic of toughness and humility. And as the NBA headed from a team game to a “ me me me “ league I completely totally checked out. Which is a shame because it’s a beautiful game and I loved all those teams and players so much.
