Most of the higher end MLB contracts establish an education trust of $50K - $80K. This ensures that the signee has money for future education (basically a scholarship in waiting). If (God forbid) he was to get injured, he would then be able to go to college using the education trust. Unless that family is flush with money, it would not be smart to pass up on an offer like ZVR was offered.

Some of you must be incredibly rich when $1.2 million is not enough to keep you from signing. Hell, he could go to baseball a few years, get the $, then go back to college and get a degree if baseball doesn't work out.

If you get a million guaranteed.....you have to take it! Good Luck ZVR.

No one thinks he ia an idiot. Many just think he used LSU for leverage, which he did. His goal was always to go pro.

Using LSU to gain leverage to get more money for his pro contract, hurt Mainieri in his recruiting. If that makes him an idiot, then I guess he's an idiot.

If it hurt Manieri's recruiting, the Manieri was an idiot. All coaches understand that the best players in their class may go pro. Its the nature of the beast.
If a 16 year old kid has a chance at getting first round money when they graduate, you'd be naive to think that they are gonna say "I'm coming to college" and then be 100% certain they'll follow through on it

I would have taken the money some players didn't get even drafted had better arm and power than Mitchell. Take the kid from Southern the right fielder had a cannon and could hit. The draft is a funny thing!!

As Al McQuire said when Dean "The Dream" Meninger left Marquette early for the NBA. The priests were on me about it. I said, "Father, how can I convince someone who's been offered a million dollars that it's better to stay here and earn a letter?"
