AC settings were not restricted at any hotel we stayed in Europe, but you want to confirm where ever you stay has AC. If you rent an air bnb, it might not have AC. As previously mentioned, ductless AC’s were visible on most older apartments.

Went to Rome and Naples in June. Rome is awesome but I don’t recommend going there in summer. As others have said, most places have very little a/c if any. Our hotel had it but it was weak. Hotter than hell the whole time there, like uncomfortably hot, and I’ve lived in Louisiana most of my life. Felt safe in Rome but ugly arse graffiti on every freaking wall in that city. Naples wasn’t not safe around the port - tons of African immigrants living on the streets and trash everywhere. Panhandling all over the place. Our guide only allowed us a few minutes there before heading to Amalfi coast which was incredible. We’ll go back one day.

Shockingly these 2 are related. FWIW the UK does have some fatties outside of the major metros.
Their food prices are good but understated. You can still easily spend $100-200 for a family of 4-5 to eat out. It’s cheaper than the US for sure.
I was in Rome in Nov 2025 and there were absolutely the immigrants trying to scam you especially around the coliseum. But I’m glad you didn’t see them and felt safe

I have seen what you have seen in Naples and other areas as well, but my point is that judging all of Europe by these popular tourist areas is like judging the USA by visiting New York. There are many, many beautiful places in Europe where you can get away from most of this.

It is easier to make money in tUSA than anywhere else in the world. There are however, places in Europe much cheaper to live once you made that money. Key is, keep US citizenship.

I’m describing what I did not see and I was there five days in the heart of the city. They may have all been gay but you couldn’t tell by appearance. Not a single rainbow flag was visible either. It didn’t seem to be an agenda. Now Athens was a bit strange in that regard. The same can be said about appearances but every souvenir store had a rack of penis shaped stuff; penis bottle openers of all sizes that appeared to serve a dual purpose, decks of cards with ancient Greek looking pictures of dudes getting it on, beanie baby looking penises, etc. I never saw anyone buying that stuff but it was every where in Athens.

Yes our taxes are high but almost everything else is cheaper than in the states. The big one being child care and school. School from age 3 until graduation from college is covered by taxes.
Groceries and eating out are significantly cheaper here.
ETA we also get some hefty tax returns.
