This story was published in 1995 so he was 65 in 1995 which means he is pushing 80. totally plausible

OK, so let's say dude exaggerated that he ran down the sideline and signaled touchdown, I can at least believe he snuck in with a ref outfit. And that's still pretty solid.

True or not, ever since the first time I saw the Billy Cannon run I've always thought to myself that referee had some wheels.

I cannot see anything in the video that disproves his story. A ref runs onto the field after the catch and follows Cannon down the sideline. I can't confirm if he is a real ref. You would need additional footage or other witness to confirm or disprove.

I long suspected SEC refs were car salesmen who just happen to show up on game day. Explains a great deal in fact.

This story reminds me of the "I was King Kong" newspaper story that circulated in the 70's. Some guy claimed to have been the guy in the gorilla suit for the original King Kong. Only problem... the original King Kong was a foot high stop-action prop.
BTW, I'm the guy that shot Huey Long.

Cannon slows down considerably once he realizes he is alone which is the last 40 yards or so. He juked half of the Ole Miss team on the other side of the field. I believe there is a single Ole Miss player past the 50, and he gets cut down at about the 35 yard line.

Except they didn't have blogs in 1995.

Nope.
PS If it IS a real story then I want to know where the REAL line judge on that side of the field was...was he getting a hot dog?

As I posted above the ref running down the field with Cannon has be interviewed before, so if the person did get in the game as a fake ref he wasn't the one running down the field with Cannon on the punt return.

Yes...I guess i should be more clear. I can believe Rogers was allowed to stay on the sidelines after sneaking in wearing a fake ref's outfit. But no way he was the ref running with Cannon.

quote:Yeah, I agree. This is a made up story, a good, one but made up. I actually feel sorry for that reporter w/the Clarion Ledger, he got snookered!
Go watch that run again and you'll see the official they are talking about was on the playing field the entire time. He was never on the sidelines. In fact he was about 5 yards on the playing field at the beginning of the run

Its a fun story and a good one. I love stories...
But its about as true as the following was...
quote:
He cultivates an image of floating above his own legend; when he let the sports bar display his trophy, he asked the guy picking it up to fib and tell reporters they found it beneath an old oil-cloth in the garage, which he did, which became another chapter in the myth.
...nice story also...whoops...debunked now.

quote:Well in fairness, there are 2 officials running down the field. One down the middle and the other on the sidelines. I have a real hard time believing the story though.
That is a real ref. running with Billy Cannon and he has been interviewed many times in the past, he is not a fake ref.
