While people may have thought this. Calling major bullshite that anyone said this to Guice's face. One, he would have beat the shite out of them. Whoever said it would know Guice would get away with it. Two, he was good at football, no one wants to frick with that guy.
I went to CHS and I can tell you 100% those guys feel it their freshman year when they get there. There was a table in the cafeteria where only the black guys sat and they only talked to each other. Yes, they chose to do this and no one forced them, but they chose it because they were uncomfortable everywhere else.
Obama was elected for the first time my senior year of high school. A LOT of my classmates wore all white shirts that day to make a statement. I was the one who stood up in class and had to explain why that would make some of our classmates feel like they didn't deserve to be there.
It's not always blatant racism, in fact I would say it rarely ever is. But it's there, and those kids know it.

It's not unequivocally true for every child but I can promise you way too many kids of both races don't grow up knowing how to interact with others.
This is true. I went to catholic school my whole life before LSU and didn't have a black kid in my class until I got to CHS. It's not that I had never talked to a black person before and had never seen their culture, but I was definitely surprised by some of the things they did and said. I wasn't exposed to that until the 8th grade.

Witnessed the same and similar things too. 10 years before you. I know it's there. I just call into question if anyone had the balls to say it to his face.

Not turning back there to the painful days of high school at a local, nearly all-white private school plopped in the middle of South Baton Rouge like a rose amid the thorns—a school that recruited him to play football, then threw him into a mess of racism and stereotypes.
I graduated in 2006. Was there some white who didnt like blacks? Yes. Were there some blacks that didnt like whites? Yes
But that was so few and far between. Everyone for the most part got along great.

I can confirm Catholic High is racist af

There is a stark contrast between "black and white culture"......
I mean I'm sure most people have met others outside their race, but for guice and them they got throw into the deep end of "white culture"
I ain't saying one is right and the other is wrong, but that's reality. Generally speaking, crossing the isle can be awkward at best for those experienced in such

That's utterly rediculous. I do not believe that for one second
I know that seems farfetched but it's true. Lower class kids literally only interact with lower class kids. Same with their parents, so then the children are never put in position to interact with other kids from different socioeconomic backgrounds.

For someone who says they avoid the streets of Southside Baton Rouge, Guice sure is throwing up them 4s in Banga Griffin's Southside video

Now, a school is simply brick and mortar, what makes or breaks it is the students and admin. While I was there (02-06), there was not a racist tone that would make a black student feel like he was going through thorns and everything else that article mentions
Now maybe that changed because Catholic now has trashy white rednexks and a ballless administration. The white shirt Obama story mentioned earlier would have never happened when I was there. Lamy would have had our nuts in a vice for such a stunt

I mean he obviously didn't forget where he came from.

The racism wasn't as extreme as the article makes it out to be but you have those type of people everywhere. Just unfortunate that it was Catholic being exposed for it. I know for a fact that Derrius and his other friend group got along better with his other classmates towards the end of his junior and then senior year. Great article though. Glad to see Derrius is thriving!

Welcome to every private school in the history of forever. This isn't a CHS thing. There's literally a book on the subject.
Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria

Not surprised at all by that. I wasn't trying to suggest that it's only a CHS thing, but for the people who are saying it's bullshite that they aren't exposed to upper-middle class white culture before high school, it reinforces the point.

In my experience, this is true for the kids who stick it out to graduation. They all learn that even though there are some cultural differences, most 15-18 year olds boys can find a lot of common ground. Unfortunately, a lot of the black students left during those freshman and sophomore years.

But but but I thought catholic high doesnt recruit??

That's the problem with BR being so segregated too. It isn't really a melting pot at all.

All private schools recruit students. It's just the nature of the business.
