Even Urban Meyer agrees that it's not worth scheduling a marquee non conf game

Urban Meyer is not a fan of the matchup for the Buckeyes.
“You’re opening with Texas next year. Why?” Meyer asked. “Other than it’s great for the game, it’s good for the fans, it’s good for the players. But you’re evaluated on one thing, not good. You’re evaluated at the end of the season. So I’m worried that these teams play these just God-awful schedules, horrific schedules and no one’s talking about that."

Who cares?
& Ohio State plays Bama in 27/28 (not week 1). UGA in 30/31. There is a reason these schools are choosing to do this. Is it simply financial? (Due to rev share) Do the coaches want cupcakes on the schedule?

When you get to 16 teams early season losses will be irrelevant for the most part. The 2 Conference that matter top 4 teams will be shoe in. But I agree with premise.

He's not wrong.
As a fan, I would MUCH rather watch LSU play Clemson than LSU play South Carolina St. But from a competition standpoint it doesn't make much sense for LSU and Clemson to significantly increase the risk of a loss by playing one another.
I think LSU is a legitimate CFP contender next season. I also think that they will need to be 10-2 to reach the CFP. Losing the opener to Clemson means LSU will have a ONE (1) game margin for error in the SEC. That is a lot to ask. Whereas a team like Indiana is going to play Old Dominion, Kennesaw St, and Indiana St that's effectively give them a 2 game margin for error in Big 10 play.

Committee proved they only care about record.

For the Power 4 teams. We have a 1 year sample to go off of. There will be years, especially when they go to 14-16 teams, where a win in these games will matter.
There was a group of 7 teams at 9-3 & 10-2 this year that would have been in discussion for 16 team playoff

True competitors want a challenge regardless of the circumstance. It makes sense that Urban Meyer would say something like this.

Losing the first game isnt going to hurt LSU if they win their conference or finish with less than 3 losses.
Absolutely no one wants to open with UL-Monroe.

The bigger issue is Week 1 games in the NIL/Transfer portal era
Week 1 games were already tough as you had to get guys ramped up to game speed and game level conditioning.
But in the transfer portal era, you now have your team have so many new faces on both sides of the ball and you also never know what the other team will look like week 1 with their own transfers. Both us and Clemson could bring in multiple new starters this Spring still.
From Clemson’s point of view, how do they prepare for LSUs defense with no game tape on an almost entirely new defensive set were bringing in?
Week 2 and beyond is fine as you have a game to ramp up, rotate in new players into a new scheme, and have at least 1 week of game film to go off of.

Bad example bc a 10-2 Indiana probably gets left out of the playoffs. Just like 10-2 Miami did

I’d rather watch a meaningful game in December than a glorified scrimmage in September.
Give me UL Monroe in the opener 100 times out of 100.

As a fan I look forward to opening weekend.

What team was left out because they lost a big OCC game early in the season?

Now do Ole Miss OOC.

Let’s be honest here. Urban Meyer has always been a pussy.

If LSU beat Florida we would have been left out at 9-3.

True.
But losing that first game does greatly diminish the margin for error in conf. play. LSU would have to go 7-1 in the SEC...something only one team (Texas) did in the SEC last season.

As a fan, you are right. But from a competitive advantage standpoint a loss to Clemson hurts way worse than a win helps.
