I always wonder if they would spend as much time on the NBA if they didn't have the games.

When you look closer, he doesn't necessarily have that.

Question: who are the top 4 teams LSU played this season?
my answer: Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas A&M, South Carolina

Simmons' average vs those teams:
13.5 pts, 9.66 rebounds, 5 assists, 0.66 blocks, 3.16 turnovers a game.

Those numbers aren't bad (although the turnover number is pretty damn high), but not awesome either. You'd like to see a little more blocks and a little less turnovers from your 6'10 forward.

It's been an all out assault on a college freshman who has had better numbers as a freshman than many of the greatest players of all time. Ben Simmons is a frickin incredible role player and puts up consistent numbers every night. He will make this dumbass writer look like a dumbfrick when it's all said and done

It's been TWENTY years since a CBB player has >15 ppg > 10 rpg and 5 asst per game.
And you see nothing wrong?

Our expectations were way to high regarding Simmons and rightfully so. We have never gotten the number 1 player in the country before. He just turned out to be a bust. It happens. It happened with Shabazz Muhhomad and Austin Rivers a few years ago. The one good thing Simmons did was brig us Blakeney. I expect him to break out next year and get SEC player of the year and be an All American. Also expect Sampson to grow a lot. We will be alright guys.

Pretty much this. He took all of 7 shots against Oklahoma at home in a close loss and game that could have sealed a tourney bid. Needed more and I was done after that game.

Journalism went down hill fast with the start of the social media age.

Plus media members are rarely if ever, held accountable for anything.

Everyone needs to understand something about ESPN

They have ZERO interest in reporting sports news.

They have 100% interest in making sports news.

Ben Simmons was not a bust just because our team was poorly coached and didn't play up to their potential. He actually had an incredible season, bust?

Simmons was the first player in 20 years (OF ANY CLASS FRESHMAN - SENIOR) to average 15, 10, and 5. If that doesnt qualify someone for first team all american then i dont know what does. Idiot.

Yes, he had a terrible season. No big moments, well... except for the N. Florida game when he saved LSU from another embarassing loss by putting up 43/14/7. Or the Marquette game where he had 21/20/7 and was the ONLY reason LSU was even in the game; Or when LSU was left for dead going into Vandy and he "luckily" put up 36/14/4. LSU doesn't win @ Bama without his 23/8/5 or vs. UGA without his 22/14. He had 16/11/7 vs. A&M

Did he fade away at then end of some big games? Absolutely. Did he always have great nights? No. But this team could have been a complete disaster without him.

But hey, he was awful this season. I mean, he only:

Averaged more points per game than any LSU player in the last 20 years except Marcus Thornton

Averaged more rebounds per game than any LSU player since Shaq in 1992 (24 years)

Averaged more assist per game than any LSU player since Randy Livingston in 1996 (20 years)

ALL IN THE SAME SEASON!

everybody admits he had great stats. That's not our complaint.

Our issue is that Ben didn't lead and elevate this team to even a decent level. His stats seemed quiet and empty. Honestly, there were many times where I was watching the game and had to look hard to verify that he was even on the court. He didn't take over games. Didn't make his presence felt and alter the course of the game the way a true superstar does.

Yes, the stats are tremendous - no doubt. But those numbers feel hollow, and certainly didn't translate into team success.

the media isn't "buying into" anything. They've watched Simmons the entire year, like we all have, and see his talent but also see the obvious flaws in his game. And they're calling him on it.

By the way, Ben has been getting a tongue bath from most of the media all year, so it's not like they have a vendetta against the guy. They just see what's glaringly obvious, and a team that was a monumental disappointment.

This bashing of Simmons is to a point of being ridiculous. The stats stated above are incredible. The fact that he averaged all 3 in points, rebounds and assists all in one season...my gawd people. 5 years from now you all will look back and marvel at this. It may be years before this is accomplished again at the college or NBA level.
