It's Albert Belle & it's not even close.

That’s just not true. Defense matters. Belle was hidden in LF and was still a bad fielder relative to a position where they put bad fielders. Bregman not only plays an important defensive position, he’s a Gold Glove caliber defender at that position. Belle also played in a high scoring offensive era with juiced baseballs (and, in his case, corked bats). His offensive numbers were great even for the era, but not quite as great as they look without the proper context.

2018-19 Alex Bregman as an all around player was better than any year Belle put up, though Belle’s next 3 years exceed Bregman’s next 3. Overall, they both have 30.2 WAR for their 5 best seasons. The problem for Belle, and why he isn’t in the Hall of Fame, is that he had only one other season where he was a significantly above average player. 5 great years and 1 very good year just isn’t enough. That’s what Bregman has currently as well, but he’s on his way to a 6th great season this year. He’ll still need a few more to enter the HOF discussion, but this year finally put him over the top relative to Belle.

Belle was for almost a decade in the conversation with Griffey,

He had 5 great years offensively and 1 other very good year. He was never even close to him defensively.

His peak numbers are Barry Bonds level

He had one year with an OPS+ of 194 and 2 others above 170. Bonds’ best year was 268 with 6 years above 200 (including 2 before he started juicing) and 13 above 170. And that’s before adding in base running and defense.

This guy isn’t too bad 3xAll-Star (2015, 2017, 2019) 2× All-MLB First Team (2019, 2020) 4× Gold Glove Award (2014, 2017, 2018, 2022) 2× Silver Slugger Award (2019, 2020) 2× MLB batting champion (2016, 2020)

One of only 2 players to win the batting title in BOTH leagues.

Alvin Dark was no slouch

Bregman is still a little behind Dark in career WAR, but Dark did it over a longer career so far. Still he was a very fine and much overlooked player. Not playing his first full season until age 26 definitely hurt his career numbers.

It’s Belle right now. Bregman and Skenes will have a say when all is said and done.

Lemahieu continues to be overlooked.

Those that don’t know history have failed to mentioned Joe Adcock and Al Dark.

Baseball reference has this for WAR on the mentioned players:

Joe Adcock: 33.5
Al Dark: 43.9
Albert Belle: 40.1
Alex Bregman: 42.6
Dj Lemahieu: 30.3
Aaron Nola: 35.3

It's worth mentioning that WAR changes depending on where you look because not everyone calculates it the same. Also, for the active guys it could go up over time, so Bregman will more than likely pass Dark before he retires assuming his game doesn't go to shite.

With that quad of his, it might only average out to ~80 games a year. It is a damn shame because he had by far the hottest start of his career before going down.

I realize he’s on the IL and has started slow, but I still believe Dylan Crews will be in the debate by the time he’s done.

bregman has 13 more WAR in 5 less seasons, on top of 2 WS rings. Love DJ, but Alex has already surpassed him and it's not particularly close.

There is another player not in this thread that has their number retired at the box....

I'll also throw out Ryan Theriot and Todd Walker

If he does his overall numbers will likely suffer. He got the change in scenery bump early with the Sox but his numbers were starting to decline before this year and will likely continue to decline in the coming years as they almost always do for players in their 30's.

But he had maybe the best start of a season he's had ever this year as he's typically a slow starter? I'd have to dig into the numbers to confirm but if it's not it's close.

I'd have to give Belle the nod - just my opinion - but Bregs has certainly had a great career.

Yeah. I’d have both Theriot and Walker in my top 3.

DJ is the only player EVER to win a batting title in both AL and NL. Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All-star.

If not the best, the most underrated

Its Alvin Dark in a close call. Here is a link to read about him, then you make the call: Alvin Dark Wikipedia page

He was a three-time All-Star and a two-time World Series champion, once as a player (1954) and once as a manager (1974).

Good ole Lake Chuck boy! His military service delayed his baseball career a little, but he was still one of a kind.

And WAR is a metric that figures in defense, which is a bit harder IMHO to calculate accurately. But if you use WAR as your base for determining the best Bregs will be tough to beat due to his defense.

Many in these arguments tend to look at only offensive numbers but that's a different argument.....best hitter vs. best overall player.
