From Cody Worsham on Twitter

BA: (.531)
OBP: (.658)
Runs: (46)
wOBA: (.687)
wRC: (45)
wRAA: (27)
wRC+: (254) This is absolutely insane

This stat is more or less the best way to measure a player's true skill. "wRC+ takes the statistic Runs Created and adjusts that number to account for important external factors -- like ballpark or era. It's adjusted, so a wRC+ of 100 is league average and 150 would be 50 percent above league average."

For reference, Aaron Judge in 2022 finished with a wRC+ of 207.

Barry Bonds in 2001 and 2002 had a wRC+ of 235 and 244.

Shohei Ohtani in 2021 had a wRC+ of 151.

Vlad Jr. in 2021 had a wRC+ of 166.

Mike Trout's career high wRC+ is 189.

Long story short, the highest wRC+ in each of the last 20+ seasons in the majors doesn't even sniff Crews so far this season.

I’m not a fan of some of these types of stats. They’re all “adjusted” to the point that it just seems silly to me. For example, lol at

Crews is still GOAT.

What’s his average when it’s exactly 72°?

The modern analytics are the best way to measure how good a player is. Same with QBR in football

I guess if you care about spreadsheets. I don’t really. Baseball has been way, way, over analyzed and it’s directly leading to a decline in spectator interest in the sport. But that’s for another thread.

I know Crews is the GOAT at LSU, because I’ve seent it.

wRC+ is a great way to measure players against each other when the park factors have large sample sizes and everyone is playing in the same parks. No matter what way they calculate park factors for college there just aren’t enough games with the same teams playing each other in multiple parks to generate a good park factor number.

Even if you go back multiple years you run into issues with new stadiums, teams playing a whole season in a minor league park instead of their home field (Bama and Texas have done so recently).

That’s all to say it’s nice to look at that stat but take it with a grain of salt.

He has a higher slugging percentage than the guy at UF with 17 HRs.

It's not like anyone is asking you to read a spreadsheet while watching the game. The analytics comes after the fact. And no one has to read them if they prefer not to. I'm not big on analytics either.i prefer to just watch the game. But I understand and appreciate it's place.

What happened to BA, R, H, HR, RBI, OBP? Baseball has lost its mind with stats.

Nope, it has just improved how stats are used in the game.

If you don't like it, either learn it or leave.

Those stats are still there, They are still the basis of the new stats. They just dont tell the whole story.

The point of the new stats is to do just that. Its not perfect. But when you look at the new analytics its very useful and applicable to the game. Its a huge part of the MLB, the Astros are one of the most analytical teams and its no surprise they have been good year in and year out for a bit now.

Ya know who loves spreadsheets and way, way, way overanalyzing the game? Jay Johnson.

They all still have their place.

BA and RBI are limited in how much they tell about how a guy is performing because some guys get a bunch of bleeders and some guys line shots right at people.

But what I’ve found is that they can be a good indicator of how fun a guy is to watch play. Balls in play are more fun and scoring runs is fun. BA and RBIs are absolutely fun stats.

And when the game has become a drag due to the pace of play and everything being either a walk, strikeout, or HR, the fun stats become more important as a viewer.

That's fine, but then why are you whining about the stats if they don't affect you?
