I had a student job working at the stadium. The field is raised in the middle for this very purpose. Back then the tarp only ran down the center of the field from goal line to goal line.

The local office of the NWS hourly forecast for Baton Rouge has rain chances dropping to 20% at 1:00 p.m. and below 10% at 7:00 p.m. Have some fun, boys! Geaux Tigers!

Yes, the playing field used to have a very pronounced "crown" to it to promote drainage. But I heard that with the new playing surface and a drainage system beneath the sod, the field no longer has that crown to it.

Quarterbacks used to have to compensate for that crown. Throws to the sidelines would be too high if the QBs didn't allow for the different elevation.

I'm not sure when LSU went to the flatter playing surface.

Arnsparger started the movement to remove the original crown. It was substantially reduced when he took over to help the passing game.

Over time it has been reduced even more the subsurface drainage system was installed.

I seem to recall them installing drainage pumps when the new surface was done. that field drains like a white water chute.

Yes, that was the reason they basically dug up the entire field in 2020. They installed a new subsurface drainage system then put 4 inches of gravel, a fabric layer, and a foot of sand on top of that. The field can handle plenty of rain. I doubt there’s much point in tarping it.
