Does Caleb Gilbert even throw bullpens these days?

Thought I remember reading a month or so back that he might pitch at end of year.

Even though Gilbert’s healthy, he hasn’t pitched this season. He lost his mechanics his junior year playing with an injured shoulder, and he has not rediscovered how to pitch like he did that day against Oregon State. “It's foreign,” Gilbert said. “Throwing a baseball is foreign to me now.”

I think he is still working with Dunn, but its the forgone conclusion that he has pitched his last game as a tiger

That's exactly what it looked like at the end of last year. It was like he didn't remember how to throw.
It's between the ears. He has the yips and he lost it.

How is that even possible?
I don't think anyone can really answer that. It's psychology.

The way is was described was that the brain doesn’t connect with telling the shoulder what to do.
It’s not completely uncommon to lose mechanics & not get them back.
The kid wants nothing more than to pitch again & is still working.

Sounds like he needs sports psychologist more than a pitching coach . Not a flame, being serious

Same reason Jon Lester can't throw the ball to first base. Several second basemen in the majors through the years suddenly lost the ability to throw the ball from second to first.

Rick Ankiel lost his mechanics as well. Same with Chuck Knobloch

I doubt it. It’s like he has a different arm than the one he grew up with.

Down vote because going from success to “foreign” is sad. That’s a shitty deal for the kid.

Heard a rumor he’s trying to make another comeback as a pitcher

If we are getting drummed tomorrow, and go through some arms, I wouldn't be all that shocked to see them let him throw a few balls. That was the plan against Auburn they said.
He is there, dressed, and healthy. Might not be pretty, but I would love to see him go out fighting till the end at least.

As a Hoover native, wouldn’t shock me to see Mainieri let him throw his last game in his hometown. That would actually be really cool. Feel bad for the kid

Agreed. I kind of hope he gets in the game at some point regardless, even if only for a batter or two. I know last year he wasn't particularly good but his first two years here he had some great outings, including in hoover.

Reading that article is really sad. You have to feel for the kid who pretty much has come to the realization that he is done but wants just one more inning.

What do you mean you doubt it?

What if pitching in an actual game against real competition is the cure? A problem this strange could have an equally strange solution. I wish he would have gotten an inning in a midweek game just to see.
