Nah it’s pretty standard when running 4 verts out of trips, the inside guy works to the opposite hash.

He was running perpendicular to the sideline when he caught the pass. That is NOT a vertical route.

1. 4 verticals in a concept, not a route. It does not require 4 go routes.

2. That is typically what 4 verts from trips looks like. The inside guy usually runs more of a post or cross, depending on the safety look. Against 2-high he’s typically trying to split the safeties. Against single-high looks (which is what they had when the safety on Chase’s side blitzed) the inside guy will typically target the opposite hash ~18-20 yards deep.. which is basically where Jefferson was.

It’s also common for the X to run a comeback or a stop if he doesn’t have his guy beat, which is exactly what Chase did on the play.

3. There are a lot of different variations on the concept. Every coach will have their own little wrinkles and preferences. I don’t know what other tags they may have had on the exact play call, but the overall concept certainly looked like 4 verts from 3x1 (trips).

I know what we have been running on defense on 3rd and 17. It's called PREVENT and it have remarkably unsuccessful.
Hope we have a different play this year.

The play was called “Marvin”

Named after Marvin Harrison

Basically 4 verts in a trips set and Justin gets to choose either running it vertical or cut over and he cut over
