I'm sure you shared my contempt last night when that happened and Ben moved out of the way giving an open layup to the Georgia player to avoid a foul that they still called on him anyway.

I wish Ben would try to block more shots up top instead of slapping at the ball down low, but maybe I'm nitpicking. I also think that since Ben got into foul trouble a couple of games in a row a couple of weeks ago that he has become less aggressive on defense just to stay out of foul trouble.

Simmons would have been the 1st pick out of HS. He will be the 1st pick after his FR year.

Shaq wouldnt have been in either situation. I dont know wht you dont understand

Different time. I looked up the 1988 draft, which would have followed Shaq's senior year in high school. 31 of the first 34 players drafted that year were college seniors. I doubt a 17 year old Shaq would have been selected ahead of player as accomplished as Danny Manning. Similarly, Ben Simmons exiting high school would not be selected over college senior Danny Manning either.

The times were different, and the drafts had better players, not just prospects. But the professional basketball world was well aware of the physical skills of a young Shaquille O'Neal. There just wasn't any NBA hype about him at that age because everyone went to college in those days.

Put it this way, would Simmons coming out of high school have been selected over Anthony Davis this season??? In Shaq's day Anthony Davis would have stayed at Kentucky for a few more years.

I see the point you're trying to make but that is not a very good comparison at all. Three years in the NBA >>>>>>>>>>> Three years in college.

The only thing I see (and I don't know if its laziness or lack of development by coaching staff) is that he doesn't always commit to showing on all ball screens....that and he'll sometimes wiff on helpside defense.

But......then again the entire team does this so I'd think it's probably more of the coaches not drilling it into these guys heads at practice and/or not holding them accountable.

not at all

some mistake his smoothness for laziness

they also forget that he logs a ton of minutes. Hell, one idiot on here the other day said he should put up better numbers due to the minutes he received and said that he would if he gave better effort

What do you think would be the effect if Simmons had a Stanley Roberts at center and Jackson at point guard? I suspect that his assists, and scoring would increase and his rebounds would decrease, because there would be fewer misses.

His effort is fine...he is just super smooth athletically and everything looks really easy for him...watch how fast he gets down the floor he is faster than much smaller

Partially agree with this. As smooth as he is, he doesn't appear to be gritty or tenacious. With that said, he doesn't necessarily need to be but this spills over to most of his teammates. They need grit and tenacity.

Points and rebounds would be down. He wouldn't get as many scoring opportunities when CJ averaged 30 points a game. Also, other players on the team would be able to rebound and not just wait for Ben to do it. Remember that Ben led the nation in rebounding until Victor became eligible and his rebounds have slowly declined because Victor is able to battle opponents for boards and not just Bennie.

Look, I'm not trying to knock Ben in this thread, I was just trying to point out that Shaq wasn't some late bloomer that no one knew about until his sophomore year.
