Do we run the ugliest option ever?

It seems like it is always to the short side, Jefferson and the back get no separation and he seems to always pitch too early.

I have seen them all but the one we have should have a bag on it's head.

What are you talking about? I think it's great that Jefferson takes the ball 3 yards off the line of scrimmage, fails to attack the defensive end allowing the play to string out and finally result in a pitch for a loss of 4.
I love it!

to be fair to the short side, it wouldn't look any better on the wide side...with a good option qb, the short side can be very effective
my theory is the option is the "out" play in the "check with me" offense when Crowton doesn't have a play call that he believes will work against the personnel the defense has in. He probably figures it will get 3-5 yards, then he'll call the next play.

This is true. I think your theory is correct also.

The spacing between the QB and the RB is poor (too close together). It develops too slowly, and they have never run the counteroption which would make the pursuit slow down a bit.

It hurts to watch JJ run the option. Its not tight and crisp enough. Its usually too deep in the backfield and it doesn't put an ounce of pressure on the defense.
I will have to go back and see what the line does on these options.
I'd much rather they fake the option and try a pass. But hell, they don't run it well enough to get a defense to bite on shite.

Agree
With the talent & speed of Shepard & Holliday, running to the wide side; worth a try. There's no substitue for speed. It can't be worst than Jefferson and Scott. I don't blame them, poor coaching.

Hanny had a good point last night, our option is basically a glorified and overdone sweep. JJ rarely keeps it so it sort of takes away the true 'threat' of the option.

I love crying about stuff.

You failed to mention that he also usually pitches it behind the RB causing them to slow down or stop to catch the pitch.

Jeff doesn't pitch to early it's that he waits too long to pitch

well from watching GT play, you run the option to the side where you have a numbers advantage. Based on the way we line up the numbers advantage is usually to the short side of the field.

He doesn't make the correct reads and that comes with practice. He also tends to pitch too often, he doesn't keep the ball when the defender doesn't commit. In that option play the QB is the primary option and you pitch as a last resort, but he doesn't do that. Also the WRs and TEs aren't blocking well enough on the perimeter. So In the cases where JJ made the correct read and a good pitch the play was broken up.

Actually we DON'T run the option... it's more of a "theres a guy tackling me, here, you take it" scheme....

You must have shitty seats.

I think they probably ought to pull the option play from the playbook for this season. For someone who is supposed to be such an offensive wizzard, the opposition seemed to have a better offense.

I think the best offense is the wishbone & the broken bone. That way you can run the triple option and play action. Coach Bryant had a great career with the bone. As an ex-coach I can tell you this you must have the players to win.

The option porbably needs to be taken out of the playbook. It's a God awful play when run to the short side and is merely a bad play when run to the far side.
Either way, it has consistently not worked.
