Earthquake wrestled here when the program shuttered its doors.
He even had a tiger tattoo on his arm that he got covered as part of a gimmick.

Kevin Jackson was a 4 time all-American (3 with LSU and 1 with Iowa State). LSU dropped wrestling in 1985 before his senior year. He is an Olympic gold medalist and a 2 time world champion. Now an assistant coach at Michigan.

Shawn Jordan who played fullback was a highly recruited wrestler out of high school and also fought in the UFC. Also heard that Nick Saban got him to come to LSU by telling him they were bringing the wrestling program back.

Before they became Title IX casualties, Wrestling and Men's Gymnastics were perennial Top 10 programs.

Victor jones the running back from Zachary in the late 80s I think was a state champion in wrestling and power lifting and supposedly he was taken by helicopter between the two meets which were occurring at the same time. I’m not sure if that’s true but that was the word in LA high school wrestling circles. Good thread. Kevin Jackson is the best of all time I think

The Victor Jones story is true, I was coaching at Zachary at the time.

I wrestled against Victor several times in HS since we were in the same weight class - 185 lbs. He won the LA State wrestling championship in 1985, I won it in 1986. Victor was 5'9", all muscle, and built like a bulldog. His physique intimidated a lot of younger wrestlers who were often defeated mentally before taking the mat. Jones played RB behind Eddie Fuller, and played 5 yrs in the NFL.
IMO, LSU would likely have won the NCAA Wrestling championship in 1985 & 1986. Coach Shack - great read was an incredible coach and had the program ready to peak. In 9 yrs under Coach Shack, LSU won 7 SEC titles. Sadly the program was a casualty of Title IX
