Also Justin Verlander for Detroit Tigers probably the permier pitcher in MLB right now can hit low hundreds late in games and tends to get faster and stronger in the late innings.
Interesting, because they were saying the same thing about Gausman last week in his game against Alabama.

How fast is Goody's heat ... he has some pop .

I don't doubt that someone's radar clocked Gausman at 102.
I also don't doubt that it was an inaccurate reading.

BTW, in 2009 it was mentioned in a broadcast at the CWS, that Stephen Strasburg, then of San Diego State, was supposed have thrown a pitch over 100 mph, and a batter from Virginia hit it out of the park (that was in a regional, I think).
Here is a YOUTUBE LINK to that broadcast. It's a compilation of Chad Jones highlights at the CWS. Fast forward to the 4:00 - 5:00 mark to listen to the comments about Strasburg. He supposedly hit 103 mph.

Agree about the greatness of James Rodney but if he passed it's news to me.
Randy44, you are right. I just looked it up on WIKI. My bad. Thanks. I will go back and edit.

Yes that must be it!

definitely inaccurate. A guy that has never hit triple digits before just doesn't all of a sudden throw 102 MPH. The gun was definitely off.

Kentucky announcers were just trying to prop up Gausman.
As someone said earlier, it isn't far fetched that a gun had him at 102....whether or not that gun is accurate is another thing all together.

Why would they be inflated? If I'm the general manager of a MLB team looking to invest millions in a young arm I would insist on accurate information.
It's like the obligatory 2 inches and 10 pounds you take off for college football players. It's 5-7 mph for college baseball players.

In all seriousness the guy hits 102-103 before ever inning with his last warmup pitch. I have no problem believing he hit 102 after getting fired up from the ump.

Was told by someone who sat next to scouts last night. He was reading 95-96 the whole night. Very impressive game by the pitcher.

Mccune posted a pic on twitter a few weeks ago that read 101 for gausman, but those guns can be inaccurate
Posted on 4/21/12 at 11:21 am to OneMoreTime
A lot of scouts and coaches use a jugs gun that read 3-5 mph faster. Compared to ray gun. Most of the time on TV they use jugs gun. But coaches and scouts are aware of that which is noted in there evaluation. But most that say they throw something is inflated because of that.

The fastest I have ever heard him hit was 98 and that was only one time. I doubt he hit 102.
Posted on 4/21/12 at 11:51 am to GFunk
For all those that doubt the speed, Ben McDonald said he throws around 98 99 alot. He said that on more than one broadcast
Posted on 4/21/12 at 12:08 pm to nolacoastie
There is just no way he throws 102, if that were the case he would be the #1 pick in the draft hands down

Because it didn't look like he was throwing that hard, and there a very few human beings that can touch 100, much less 102
Actually more people than you think can throw 100. They just don't have control to be a pitcher
