The Bengals Athletic team said the same shite. Carman was ranked as a 4th, maybe 3rd round pick. He had back surgery this year. The guy is gonna need to get his health in line a bit, though it’s my understanding they worked him out hard.

Well, they traded down to get him, so they must have had their eye on him the whole time and figured why not get some more picks out of this instead of reaching in the 30's.

Every team’s board is different. I don’t know much about Cincy’s scouting department. But Hopefully, they know more than the talking heads on TV.

Maybe the guy interviewed very well and they think he has the athletic traits to be coached up.

Imho they should have used 1st round on penei sewell and 2nd round on best wr on board (and there were some damned good ones, including Terrace Marshall)

They would have been fools to pass up as close to a can't miss wr prospect as possible with the added benefit of 2-3 years chemistry with another can't miss qb prospect. They made the right choice.

There are plenty of examples of all-pro lineman drafted after the first round. In fact there are way more that weren't first rounders than were. Trai Turner was a second off the top of my head, and I'm pretty sure he's at least been a pro bowler.

With Chase and Higgins on the outside and Boyd in the slot he can just immediately throw it at the one who isn’t doubled.

Espn.. Lol this is the same tackle that kept Chaisson in check during the natty until they moved him to the other side

Jackson will start at LG. With Reif at RT, the o line will be much improved. Williams will be back at LT. At one point Trey Lance who is their center was playing LT after Williams was injured. He was terrible at LT. They also signed free agent G Quinton Spain who allowed 1 sack in 720 snaps for the Titans.

They would have missed the chance to get a future HOFer.

This is a funny phenomenon among LSU fans. Many don’t seem to realize it when a truly great player passes though. Patrick Peterson and Jamaar Chase are two of these. These two guys are among the top at their positions in the history of American football.

Assuming no injuries, Chase will be a Hall of Famer. People will argue who was better Chase or Jerry Rice. You don’t pass on that for a tackle.

So far not at all. Did absolutely nothing. That Clemson Oline guy looks so fat and out of shape. I hope Joe doesnt have his career end in another year or two because Cincy didnt do a whole lot in addressing their biggest issue the Oline.

Offensive line is a constant need that each year needs to be addressed. Cin. has too long not even thought about it.

Let’s see you take him on, one on one.

This guy is a good football player who has won a national championship and played for another. He reminds me of Andrus Peat. Drafted as a tackle, ended up starting as a guard for 6 years. Carman doesn’t need to be all that quick to play inside. He just has to be a beast, which he is.

I love how everyone on this board is suddenly an expert on the Cincinnati Bengals.

They got him an elite and familiar pass catcher and spent 3 picks on offensive line (a 2nd, a 4th, and a 6th). Is that enough to keep him off his back this year?

They spent the majority of their draft on big heavies - 3 OL and 4 DL plus picked up Trey Hendrickson from the Saints who was second in the NFL in Sacks. You have to address needs across the field.

This article oddly enough from the The Seattle Times:
https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/bengals-fill-urgent-needs-in-draft-build-around-qb-burrow/

quote:

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Bengals focused on their lines during this year’s NFL draft. If they got it right, Joe Burrow should enjoy much better protection in his second season.

Burrow, the top overall pick in 2020, had his rookie year cut short when his pocket collapsed on him during a Week 11 loss to Washington, resulting in a season-ending knee injury.

The Bengals continued to build around their quarterback in the draft, reuniting him with one of his favorite receivers at LSU and adding three more offensive linemen among their 10 picks.

Cincinnati took star receiver Ja’Marr Chase at No. 5 overall — passing on elite Oregon tackle Penei Sewell — and traded back in the second round before taking versatile Clemson lineman Jackson Carman. It grabbed East Carolina tackle D’Ante Smith with the last of its three fourth-rounders, and selected Georgia center Trey Hill in the sixth round.

The Bengals also addressed their inability to chase down opposing quarterbacks, taking four defensive players.

Chase and Burrow already have big-time chemistry. They were teammates in 2019 when LSU won the national championship, Burrow got the Heisman Trophy and Chase took home the Biletnikoff Award as college football’s best receiver.

Chase, who opted out of the 2020 season, gives the Bengals another exciting skill player and deep threat that has been lacking since A.J. Green was in his prime.

Thanks to the deep class of offensive linemen, Carman, one of the Bengals’ top targets, was still available in the second round, even after they traded down eight spots to 46th overall.

ABOUT THAT O-LINE

Cincinnati is high on the 6-foot-5, 335-pound Carman, who is expected to come in and compete for a starting spot at guard. The addition of Carman, Smith and Hill comes after the team signed veteran tackle Riley Reiff in free agency.

“There’s a bunch of guys in there that I feel really good about,” offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said. “I think our team is in a much better place now that it was even a year ago, and I’m really excited about the direction we can go. Obviously, the core of it all centers around (Burrow), so that’s exciting to me.”

D-LINE DEPTH

Cincinnati, last in the NFL in 2020 in sacks and among the worst at stopping the run, bolstered its group of defensive linemen.

The Bengals snagged edge-rushing specialist Joseph Ossai, who played linebacker at Texas, in the third. Then they took Tulane defensive end Cameron Sample, the defensive player of the game at the Senior Bowl, and another former Burrow teammate, LSU nose tackle Tyler Shelvin, in the fourth. They grabbed Kansas State defensive end Wyatt Hubert with their final pick in the seventh round.

The new guys will get a chance to crack a rotation that should include a now-healthy D.J. Reader and free-agent acquisitions Trey Hendrickson and Larry Ogunjobi.

KICKIN’ IT

Cincinnati took Florida kicker Evan McPherson in the fifth round to compete with Austin Seibert. McPherson, the first kicker off the board, hit 51 of 60 field goals and 149 of 150 PATs at Florida. He made four field goals over 50 yards last season.

NEW LOOK BENGALS

Having parted ways with aging fixtures Green, Carlos Dunlap, Geno Atkins and Giovani Bernard, the Bengals continued to rebuild under second-year coach Zac Taylor. After being decimated by injuries to key players throughout the 2020 season — including Burrow — the Bengals should be better.

We also brought back our old O-line coach and fired the coach from last year. Signed Reiff in FA, brought back Quinton Spain(who played multiple OL spots for us) and the coaches are very high on Carman and D’Ante Smith(4th round pick from ECU). The center from Georgia, Trey Hill, could also allow Tre Hopkins to move back to guard where he belongs.

Williams and Reiff are a solid tackle duo, maybe not elite, but good enough to actually give Burrow time(at times last year it felt like Williams was the only one on the line holding his own). It all comes down to Carman IMO. If he’s as good as the coaches think he’ll be at guard(along with Willie Anderson and Anthony Munoz) I think we’ll be fine even if Hopkins is the center next year. We could also still add Trai Turner during camp if we need to.

As long as Michael Jordon isn’t starting on the line(the guy who kept getting blown up and allowed the Washington defender to get to Burrow) it will be improved even if it’s just Quinton Spain taking his spot.

I agree. You dont have to have the elite line for Burrow to be successful. His strong suit is getting rid of the ball on time and quickly. He is amazing how quick he can make reads and adjust. Also he spends a lot of time on pass protection in game prep. He is very good through presnap reads and adjustments - made the statement that Brees gave him pointers on this.

Adding Reif gives them two good tackles. The three guys they picked up are all good guard prospects. Then they added an elite 1 wr and bumped their wr group to one of the best. Bengals are a much better team going into next year than they were going into last year.

Chase obviously has to produce like Rice to be in the same class. I don't think it's a stretch to project him there though, considering he will have his own Joe Montana throwing to him.

I truly believe these 2 will go down as one of the all-time great qb/wr duos in history. Don't forget at one time Rice was an unknown wr out of Mississippi Valley state. Would you have scoffed at someone who predicted a HOF career for Rice on the day he was drafted? These 2 DESTROYED the SEC, then the playoffs together. Do you think that will just stop in the NFL?

I agree and I believe that tackle will bust out of the league. His family looked fat as frick and they didn’t even bother to bother to hide the pizza as it was splayed all over the kitchen table.

Sewell has a chance to be a bust. Hell, half the time tackles in the top 10 are busts.

To be fair, there are receiver busts as well: But we KNOW Chase and what he can do, especially when paired with Joe. Chase’s floor is 6-7 pro bowls. Sewell’s floor is dying in his mid 20’s of a heart attack.

Cincy made the right decision.
