Johnson started coaching LB's when Peveto was given sole responsibility for Special teams after Miles was fired

Lean my arse, he was committed to LSU, flipped when BDP was fired.
If this is the case why didn't he follow BDP to Ole miss?

Everybody wants a recruiter first, coach second. LSU needs great/good coaches who can recruit.

At overlapping points throughout his recruitment he was silently committed to both LSU and Alabama.

He didn't flip anywhere. He just went public with the one he wanted.

All information is based off of 247 sports.
Peveto's Recruiter Rankings
2006: 78
2007: 40
2008: 100
2013: 371 @UK
2014: 311 mostly @UK
2015: 283
2016: 4
LINK
I did not look up his Northwestern State years.

His average ranking for this 7 year span is 169. 2016 was a phenomenal year for him #4 and 2007 was his next best ranking at #40.

Peveto brought in some quality recruits, but he could not have done it without the LSU brand next to his name. While at Kentucky he was ranked 371 and 311.

Somebody tell me again how we are losing in this deal?

I would rather have someone who can coach than someone who can recruit. Look at what Aranda worked with everywhere else he has been. With him as DC the players will come.

I don't get why LSU didn't just keep Peveto as the OLB coach. Firing the national recruiter of the year to promote a GA just makes no sense IMO.
Sometimes you just have to cut the losses and start fresh with young coaches...

Evidently they see something in "meatball" or Dennis that makes them willing to give him a shot. I trust O and Aranda in making this move and he may turn out to be a really good coach and recruiter now that he's on staff.

Dennis Johnson getting the promotion with the approval of Orgeron, Aranda, and Jenkins tells me all I need to know about his coaching ability.

Plus these days the most important aspect of recruiting is the coaches personality. Connections matter way less than they have in the past. Anybody with a good personality can build relationships. I think Johnson will do pretty well recruiting and coaching.

i laugh every time someone said he was a great recruiter...it's like everyone was focused what he did last year to give him that title...he might be good, but he's nowhere the level of many others out there who built that rep.

O brought Freeze up from his HS HC job to Ole Miss ands eventually Freeze became a darn good HC. He fired BDP. Fired Cam. Promoted Johnson to LB coach.

Maybe O is a little better evaluator of coaching talent than people give him credit. Who knows? We may be talking about the O coaching tree years from now.

We still land Allen imo.. He's gonna stay home.. Plus we have a good shot at gay and possibly flipping Phillips and ignont. All of these guys we have a shot with. So BDP leaving may not hurt us as bad as we thought. We could still sign one of the stronger LBer classes in nation imo

The BDP thing was a reaction to public opinion.

I REALLY doubt that. I know Coach O gets a lot of flack here as "just a DL coach" but I can't imagine that he'd make professional decisions like staff hiring/firing based on what the Rant has to say.

quote:

Just because the guy has been a bad coordinator (very bad, yes) does not mean he is not a good recruiter (he is very good) or he can not be a good position coach.

I've seen a lot of references through the years to him being such a good recruiter. Someone earlier even mentioned he was at one time a national recruiter of the year. On a Google search I found the BDP had been recognized at different times as a good recruiter, but I didn't find any national awards. Was he a good position coach??? We'll never know since we weren't there. OTOH, if he were a good position coach I doubt he'd been fired from his position of Special Teams Coordinator and LB's Coach. It seemed like wherever he went as a position coach things deteriorated.

quote:

The fact that he was sought by many P5 programs after Orgeron fired him indicates BDP is a valuable recruiting asset.
I know Ole Miss hired him as a position coach, but I don't remember a bunch of stories of many P5 programs pursuing him for their staff. Even if that's true, it doesn't necessarily mean he's that good of a coach. Every profession has it'"weak ones" that are able to continue finding work in their field even though they're not that good.

I trust Coach O to fire and hire in a way that upgrades LSU football.

I wouldn't say Allen was much of a lean when he stated he'd rather sit on BAMA bench for 3 years than start at LSU.....

On a Google search I couldn't find the reference to BDP winning a national recruiter of the year award. Would you share the link w/ this info?

Can we all just agree that LSU needs great coaches who can recruit very well? My gosh sometimes this place sounds like liberals attacking conservatives over trying to eliminate the "affordable" health care act.
