For some reason, other teams contained Milroe.

The talent level is not up to LSU standards

NO ONE denies that. But there is a world of difference between not being up to the level of past LSU defenses and being one of the worst units in America. There are many, many teams across college football this season that don't have defense talent up to "LSU standards". Yet, their coaches are finding a way to at least make them average...which is ALL THIS LSU DEFNESE WOULD HAVE TO BE!

LSU's coaching staff has completely wasted maybe the best offense they will ever have under Brian Kelly. Kelly will probably never again get a scenario where a 5th year starting, true dual-threat, QB returns, along with an entire experienced receiving corps and experienced RBs. Oh, an not to mention, an entire starting OL.

This defense did not have to be great. It really didn't even have to be good. It just had to be average. And the staff couldn't come closes to reaching that incredibly low level.

Last year Kelly and his staff significantly overachieved. They deserve credit. This year, even if they finish 9-3, will be a very disappointing season because of what this team should have been.

Defensive talent is the biggest issue as to why this isn't a great defense. But coaching is the biggest issue as to why it isn't an average defense.

but any good DC would struggle with this bunch.I can get on board with this statement but the lack of improvement is still a concern.
have issues, yes. But we aren’t, talent wise, the worst defense in history.

How can the line not know the call of who to loop. According to info we had three instances of linemen not looping into their assignment.

Tgst is coaching.

Zero awareness to down and distance, coaching

Abhorrent tackling techniques. Coaching.

We simply are not preparing our guys.

He needs to go, but everyone is ignoring the personnel decisions every week. Not putting Weeks in to spy Milroe in the 2nd half is baffling.

100%. I'll give Saban his due, that guy always finds a way to take your best player and neutralize what he does best. Granted, sometimes the other teams best player is so good that you really can't stop them (Burrow, Cam, Manziel, etc) but by and large, he makes you beat him with something other than your best punch. It was abundantly clear that Alabama's best punch was Milroe's legs. If they started going deep and torched your young corners, fine. But we saw that Milroe had open receivers and often times overthrew them or just straight missed them. The fact that House allowed Milroe to beat us doing what he does best is inexcusable.

Yes and no.

Why are we ranked behind Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Arkansas and even fricking Ole Miss defensively?

Are those teams the most talented teams in the nation on defense?

And Kelly’s answer has been to plug holes with 5th and 6th year players from the Pac10 and Big12 who are only playing a 5th or 6th season because they have zero draft prospects. I want defensive players who are on NFL draft boards. Of course to do that you need a defensive staff who can actually recruit and develop.

OP is correct. We have talent, we just don’t have the same level of talent as last years. It is obvious. At this level, the margin of error is very small. We can beat the hell out of Auburn , NC State, most PAC or Big teams as is. We don’t have the talent across the board on defense to win 15/20 against the top 20. Your goal is to be at a Georgia or Alabama talent wise where coaching doesn’t matter outside of one or two games max. Of course , Jimbo is the anomaly and could screw up a ball bearing.

Maybe because their secondary is a lot more talented than ours, and they could concentrate on stoping the run. Saban knew LSU would be be overly concerned with their garbage level talented secondary, and that would open up the run for Milroe.

Agree with everything you posted.

If kelly doesn't get rid of house and at least 2 other defensive coaches I'm done with him. Coaching and scheme has been a problem the past 2 years.

Yea I bet ole miss is littered with 5 star defensive talent…

A defense has 11 starters and about 7 more who are regulars. We are down 7 of those. But what's worse is that we are down 5 out of the 7, or so, regulars in the secondary.

This has caused us to implement strategies to protect our DBs and has radically constrained what our DC can call. It's a matter of picking our poison.

We have this bunch because our DC is so awful the HS recruits and portal talent don't want to be caught up with our DC schemes making our players look even worse than they are. Watch what Perkins does and that will give us a good idea of just what the players, and therefore, recruits, think of what benefit they can gain by playing under House. House has literally turned an All American into an average player. Don't tell me HP was any good against FSU and Bama, because you are kidding yourself. These were the two games LSU needed star power to show up. House neutered that.
