In game 1 under Baker, our rate was 44.8%.

That number sounds kind of hard to believe, how is this calculated?

I know Baker's goal was 25%

I posted the formula earlier. It’s just a 1 game sample size, it will certainly drop as the season goes on.

LSU is still few players away from having a dominant defense especially at safety but they are already addressing that through recruiting. I think they finally have the right coaches. On offense they have the players but the jury is still out on Sloan and Nuss. They called the right plays for the most part and if Nuss executes them it is a different ballgame. We're talking 4-5 plays that's all. And I expect to see Nuss run with it occasionally to keep the defense honest. He has to.They both get the benefit of the doubt as they were both starting in their first meaningful regular season game. I expect improvement over the next 4 games from both sides of the ball.

The defense gave up a lot of yards considering USC only ran 58 plays, but they played really well for probably 90% of the game. There looked to be a couple of missed coverage assignments but nothing like what we saw last year. Saivion Jones had a fantastic game on the edge. The DTs held their own for the most part. Stamps looks like he could be growing into a stud corner. Woodland looks like he might be solid as well. The DB’s competed in man coverage. I could go on.

On top of that some of USC’s gains came on straight up highlight reel plays that were honestly pretty well-defended. There’s the big catch in the first half obviously, but I’m pretty sure the WR one-handed the catch on the targeting play as well. Not to mention the balls that could have been turnovers but just took unlucky bounces. I also think the defense got hosed on some no-calls throughout the game but it is what it is.

Our defensive execution wasn’t perfect, but it was pretty damn clean for an opening game under a brand new scheme, following one of the worst defenses in school history. There’s a lot to be excited about IMO.

Yeah I saw it further down. 44% seems rather high when you factor in that there were no turnovers in the formula. Makes me wonder how much gauging defensive performance off of this. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out over the course of the season.

It’s smart to not include actual turnovers since turnovers depend a lot on luck. Forced fumbles indicate pressure and, well, havoc. Whether you recover the ball or not is mostly luck. So LSU got credit for 2 forced fumbles, even though we didn’t actually have a turnover.

I loved what Baker did with the defense honestly. He doesn't have a ton of talent and absolutely got the most out of them. It was so nice to see us get a few stops.
