We should have brought a few blind side cb blitzes on third and long.
Agreed. Any type of selective DB/LB blitz to make the QB uncomfortable and not let the routes develop what have added to our success. DEF got gassed towards the end as the OFF couldn't not sustain a drive. Overall - excellent work by the DEF and let's BEAT AUB!

We didn’t stop 3rd and shorts until they were on a short field. Luckily they missed a FG and turned it over down there, or it might have been a different game.
And I’m not suggesting we cover the dump off. I said shadow it better. Early in the game, they didn’t even consider the dump off and MSU was ripping off 7-9 yard plays left and right. Later on, they had one of the linebackers drift back into passing lanes then flow hard to the dump off and those plays were cut down significantly. That was a good adjustment.
The man came late when they started completing long comeback routes. Good offenses adapt and defenses must follow suit. Jones called a nice game yesterday. Just made a few mistakes late IMO. That should be obvious.

I’m impressed that this team is growing and getting better weekly. Last year we fell apart. The more this team takes coaching the better we will be.

Kept the receivers in front of them for the most part and conceded the dink and dunk. It worked.

If we used that defensive gameplan last season in the first game we’d have won by 10

Just because LSU was too stupid to do it last year does not mean Jones is a good DC now.
No It means Jones learned, if it were up to coach O he would have played a 43 and we would have lost like last year. The 38 is the future against passing teams.

If it was frustrating at all to you then you weren’t actually aware of what was going on until after they failed to score.

But you do realize this opens the middle of the field up right? We would have been torched.
This. It was a calculated bet on giving up the least amount of damage. If you creep up, you open the kinds of space that they found between the LB and Safety for the next to last TD. Rogers is very accurate at 30 years or less, so you have to crowd those gaps, or he will find them.
If your LBs are fast and athletic, and some of ours definitely are, then you give them the checkdowns and swarm to the ball. It worked for the most part, because Rogers didn’t find many of those 15+ yard seam routes open yesterday. In fact, the pick he threw was an attempt to hit the soft spot between two zones. It was a force by Rogers, and Flott was in position and made the play.
Another indication of how well the gameplan worked- State ran the ball 26 times. Leach does NOT want to run the ball that much. We forced him to. They only ended up averaging 4.4 ypc, so they never were able to really gash us with it.
All this said, could we have executed better? Absolutely. There were some passes where the guys reacted a second too late and gave up a play in their zone. We could have had 2-4 more picks with faster reactions closing tight windows. We also missed a few sack and tackle attempts that could have stopped drives. The bust on the wheel route for the last TD was bad. Coverage was right there on the 2pt conversion and didn’t beat the throw. It definitely could have been better and turned this into a 2-3 score final.

Only thing I would have done different is mix it up more but it worked and going to four man front in red zone worked too

It worked against Air Raid Leach but won’t work against Finley if we see him

What was frustrating were the LBs and safeties not reacting quick enough to the underneath routes we were giving them. Maybe they are just not capable of the kind of reaction times I expect from LSU talent. Sage Ryan needs to get on the field. I know he's a freshman and will make mistakes but he is very talented and his talent will makeup for what he lacks in CFB experience IMO.

Actually that was decent good ypc. Snd if they had run more they may have had more success. But yea, Leach is pass happy snd we used that against him.

We did have 2 picks.

The scheme was fine, but he could mix in some blitz3s. Then again, that qould open up LBs to cover hot routes and we all know how well that position group covers

It "worked" against an awful team.

How about throwing ina delayed blitz on 3rd and long every once and a while?
