Position: Center
Competitors: Lloyd Cushenbury, Garrett Brumfield

What makes the competition at the center spot especially intriguing is that new offensive line coach James Cregg has a “best-five” philosophy. What this means is he’d like to find a way to start his five-best linemen, even if that means shaking up position assignments.

Entering the spring, Lloyd Cushenbury seemed to be the heir apparent at center, but that was before JUCO guard transfer Damien Lewis arrived and immediately drew tons of praise. So, if things shake out as expected and LSU has Saahdiq Charles and Austin Deculus at the tackle positions, and Ed Ingram at right guard, it’ll be interesting to see who among Lewis, Garrett Brumfield and Cushenbury make up the final two spots on the line and what that means for the center position.

Our interpretation is that the center position is Cushenbury’s to lose, but Brumfield could take it, which would likely give LSU a starting five of LT Charles, LG Lewis, C Brumfield, RG Ingram and RT Austin Deculus.

Of course, several other linemen will have something to say about this and the two-deep depth chart. These include tackles Adrian Magee, Badara Traore, Jakori Savage, and Cameron Wire, guard Donavaughn Campbell, and center Cole Smith. Regardless of how things pan out, LSU has a lot more options to play with and a ton more depth than it had last year at this time when its began preseason camp with six healthy scholarship O-linemen.

Damn must have been a rough camp with only 6 olinemen on top of having to do the Canada line shifts.

I don’t get it either. Substantial talent and experience. Best OL ever? Probably not. But last year it was a liability at times, I’m expecting it to be somewhere between solid and awesome all season.

I’m anxious to see how coach Cregg gets these guys ready for this season!

I think the OL COULD be very good. But I'm not ready to make any absolute statements yet. IMO, whoever ends up starting at the guard spots will be fine. Charles should be ok at tackle, but the other spot is a big question mark. Trahoe looked like he was standing still in the spring game as the ends/OLB's went flying by. Obviously Deculus was a highly ranked recruit coming in. But LSU showed no hesitation in playing true freshman last year and he was quickly passed up by two "lower ranked" guys. I think that could be a little concerning.

It's clear they really want to get Brumfield on the field, but they can't do it at the expense of Lewis and Ingram. He's probably a better blocker than Cushenberry, but the Center spot is much more than just being able to block. That guy is making all the calls on the OL. LSU has been fortunate for the last 3 years to have a very good player at Center (Pocic then Clapp) who was clearly the leader of the OL.

I think their dream/hope is that Brumfield can handle the line calls, but working together as a combined unit is MUCH more important that one guy maybe being a bit better individual blocker. If Brumfield can "quarterback" the line, he'll start. If not, Cushenberry will be the guy even if he might be a slightly lesser player.

Deculus was an absolute road grader in his HS film. I'm hoping he shows out in camp and wins that RT job.

Looks like we have a lot more depth across the board than last year.

Brumfield, Charles, Ingram = 3 starters (math is hard)
Lewis and Traore have substantial experience (JUCO)
Magee, Campbell, Lloyd have many years in the program
Deculus played in most games last year

does not equate to SEC experience. Traore showed that in the spring.

I know. We were thin at linebacker when we signed Aranda. What were we thinking? Dumbass.

The biggest reason last year was such a let down was because of depth on the lines. O-line didn't start with much to begin with and D-line was hit hard with injuries.

IMO the entire line hinges on RT. Deculus showed nothing last year, but he's the leader at RT right now. Traore was lost this spring. Magee honestly hasn't played bad, and I like him a lot, but it seems like they want to keep him as a swiss army knife 6th man type who comes in when someone goes down or gets nicked at guard or tackle.

I feel very confident they find a great group to the left of RT out of Charles, Lewis/Cush, Brumfield and Ingram. All those guys bring some measure of experience and talent. All that time Ingram and Charles got as freshmen will really pay off this year.

I believe cregg will have them ready and the line will be a strength this year. Cregg was a really good hire.
