I assumed everyone knew 2007 Safety - Craig Steltz was a consensus 1st Team All-American & 1st team All-SEC Safety last year. Well, take a look..

LINK

Nick Saban wasted Steltz's redshirt freshman year due to poor player management. Steltz recorded 1 tackle as a true freshman. Under DC & DB's Coach Doug Mallory, Steltz improved every year & lead 2007 National Champs LSU along with Ali Highsmith with 101 tackles. Steltz is 6th All-Time at LSU in INTs.

Can't help wonder what if Steltz's redshirt hadn't been wasted by Saban, how the 2008 team would have done with an All-American playing at Safety..

i don't think he'd help our pass D out much. that's our biggest problem area

and the same thing is going to happen with ryan baker in a few years

His pass d was allowing the receiver to catch the ball then rocking them with hit to try and jar it out

Basically the same as Harry Coleman, however, Coleman doesn't seem to connect as much or make as many big plays as Steltz.

saban did this with many players b/c he needed to win. do you remember Saban being qouted during the 2001 SEC championship game, when he needed a DB and Travis Daniels was a red-shirt, he told Daniels that he'd gaurantee he would get drafted if he played for him in that game. Look where Travis Daniels is now!!

Steltz was great, but I didn't seem to see him playing with the same tenacity we'd been accustomed to seeing during the 2007 season, especially towards the end. Maybe it's only me though.

I think he would of helped get the defenses plays into the young secondary.

LSU would be 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the SEC.

For the love of god, get off the Saban thing.

Not surprising. He said Addai had 3rd round Talent & that Whitworth had 5th round talent.

whitworth - 3rd to 4th round...he went in the mid 2nd, so the NFL pretty much agreed with me

and i said addai would go in the first IF he did some things, which he did.

would addai have gone in the first running a 4.50, not catching the ball well at the combine and in workouts, and weighing 205? uh, no

The $30 Million dollar contract Whitworth recently signed, laughs at you & your "Talent evaluation skills" that are lacking in every aspect & have been for nearly 5 years on this board.

I'm sorry but it's a factor. LSU could definately have used Steltz this year - no question.

I am pretty sure that Steltz played a decent amount on special teams his freshman year, so I would look at how many games he played in rather than the number of tackles to see if it was a "wasted" year. I don't consider playing regularly on special teams to be a waste.

Of course, I'd like to have Steltz this year but you could think like that about virtually any guy who played as a true frosh (and did anything less than start).

he was actually set to RS i believe after playing in a game or 2 early that season, then coming back and having to play late in the year VS Miss St or Ole Miss, foget which one, thus burning his redshirt

this supports Lester's recollection:

"FRESHMAN SEASON (2004)
Saw action in a reserve role in four different games ... Played in wins over Mississippi State, Florida and Arkansas ... Also saw action against Iowa in the Capital One Bowl ... Recorded his only tackle of season against Arkansas."

Now I can't remember where I got this but I think it was lsusports.net.
