Is this a serious question? The best football player to ever wear the Purple and Gold of LSU? Not sure he was the best player on last year's team..
If he has a year like his freshman year he is def in the conversation. If he has a year like last year he is def top 3.

Except for Pete Maravich, TM7 has the best ball skills of any player I have seen - PERIOD.

man some of y'all have VERY short term memories. Tyrann is a great player but no, he is not even close to the best LSU player in history. Tyrann gets a ton of hype and recognition because of how good the team is, something many other players didn't have the advantage of, especially with the media coverage of today. Players better, in college, than Tyrann (this could change if he continues to produce):
Kevin Faulk
Billy Cannon
Bert Jones
Josh Reed
Tommy Casanova
Glenn Dorsey (had the exposure of Tyrann)
Dalton Hilliard
Y.A. Tittle
Tommy Hodson
...to name a few, there's more
This thread reminds me of a "greatest ever" ESPN poll every time someone does something great, y'all need to pull back on the reigns a little bit

how do you figure? Billy Cannon was the best player on both sides of the ball for LSU. teams didn't put up playstation stats in the 50s running the ball with 3 and 4 running backs every play. cannon also won the hiesman trophy and was on a national title team

claiborne was never sent on the blitz
teams threw away from him, or tried to all season, and he still had 6 picks, an INT td, and a KO td. tyrann picked up "stats" because he played more like a safety or rover. mo shut down the other teams #1 receiver every game

I hope you're joking. I swear our fan base has to be in the top 5 of fan bases that shite on their own players. Good god. Yeah the NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR isn't the best player at his position.
I believe Mo Claiborne won the THORPE AWARD FOR THE NATIONS BEST DEFENSIVE BACK, or was I dreaming that? what position does Tyrann play again?

Really this is your argument? Clairborne was the best DB in the nation last year and a Top 5 pick in the draft. Teams threw away from him and Chavis did not use him to blitz, instead leaving him one on one with the other team’s top receiver. It is obvious TM7 has a knack for forcing fumbles, and he can return a punt for a touchdown. But he is not a feared defensive back, teams will challenge him, sometimes he gets upper hand and sometimes they do. Sometimes stats tell the whole story and sometimes they do not, this is an issue where they don’t when talking about two players who are used in completely different ways on the defense. Over past 10 years we could probably name 5 other LSU defensive backs that were better than TM7. That in itself tells me he isn’t one of the “greatest” when he doesn’t stand out at his position.
LSU is very lucky to have TM7 and Chavis uses him to the best of his ability. Chavis puts TM7 in position to make plays and to cover up the flaws that he has. He doesn’t leave him on an island to cover the best player one on one, he is sent on the blitz, he is used in a unique way because of his abilities. TM7 has great instincts, he plays hard to make up for his physical short-comings, and is well received by both fans and media. He is a great player for LSU but I don’t see how he is the “greatest” player for LSU.

Much better DB in my opinion
Again, I am not knocking TM7, because he is a special and unique player, but he isn’t even the best player on the LSU defense so how can we consider him greatest of All-Time? That is some pretty Elite Company really.
Although the OP may have some stats skewed as well (or his LSU Bio is wrong), from his player bio on LSUSports.net, “In his 25 game career, he has created a total of 14 turnovers (eight fumble recoveries, four interceptions, 2 forced fumble recovered by a teammate) ... Already owns the school record with 11 forced fumbles after he recorded two against Kentucky (previous record was seven held by Ali Highsmith) ... The 11 career forced fumbles ranks as the seventh-highest total in NCAA history and ties Guss Scott of Florida for the SEC record ... Took over at one of the cornerback positions in 2011 for the departed Patrick Peterson ... Shifts to nickel back when the Tigers go to their other defensive packages ... “ Although it may be LSUSports.net as well not updating.

No. Sorry, but I just don't see him as that great when I watch the games. With PP you could definitely see "it" and I thought that Mo was a lock down defender and was a dangerous punt returner when he was used (and when they kicked to him) last year.
Hey, he is very very good, but to put him on a pedestal with Billy Cannon or even say that he is clearly above our recent greats to the point that you don't even have them in the conversation? No. Frankly I thought some of our D Linemen were as much the MVP on our team last year as anyone else.

Hell no, not even close.
LOL....like it or not football is a game where statistics determine who the best is. The conversations about who best teams in history are judged by their win/loss records, final ranking, championships and offensive and defensive rankings....not how many players went on to play in the NFL or how many were 1st round draft choices etc.....although there is usually a correlation. Stats are everything. It is no different for individual players if they play a position where stats are relevant. IMO, that would exclude lineman and to some extent LBs and FBs. While some of the old timers want to rely on folklore to make their argument, stats are relevant. Not how big and fast a guy was, or if he wrestled gators in the swamp or won a bunch of bar fights. Granted that they didn't keep stats like forced fumbles, sacks and tackles for loss 40 or 50 years ago but based on TM7's stats in 2 years, and the award recognition he has gotten, to say it's not even close.....is just plain stupid.

I always disliked the "best football player ever" question. It's unfair due to too many factors.
what era did each player play in?
what is it a running era or passing era?
what was the record of the teams?
I'll say this.TM7 will go down as one of the most competitive, ball hawking, play makers in college football defensive history.Same with PP & Mo.

How many of those DBS you said you could name that were better won national defensive player of the year. And my Arguement is if he has another year like last year he is def in the top two or three. Sorry but stats count.

As a player, I would rather "Claiborne".
Here, see, eg, LSU v Ala., 1/9/12.
Both were great players, but to ignore the advantages which Tyran enjoyed pursuant to the Honey Badger hype, isn't fair.
That same notortiety will assist in making Tyran a Heisman candidate.Hype helps a player win awards. It doesn't make him a better player.

Not many however they had impact as a defensive player just as much as TM7. He forced fumbles and had some highlight plays on national tv. I don't think he was best defensive player on LSU last year but he was the most hyped. Which plays a big part into many awards, always has and really always will. Self promotion and media promotion can influence voters just as much if not more so than actual play.
Also, stats don't always tell that true story and as I have used before can be manipulated to argue for or against what you want. Claiborne was a better DB last year and used differently.
