Based on his [Kevin Mawae] pro career, yes.
I'm never quite sure how much weight to give that in these discussions, though. While, I think it needs to be given some, it can't be the end-all-be-all in evaluating the greatness of a college player.
College career: Mawae attended LSU and was redshirted in 1989. He started seven games as freshman at left tackle and was Freshman All-SEC, he was also team's long snapper. In his sophomore season, he was a first-team All-SEC selection, playing three different positions; left tackle (8 G), center (3 G), and left guard (1 G).As junior, he played left tackle and was chosen second-team All-SEC and was a third-team All-American. For his senior season he moved from left tackle to center for all 11 games. He played in Blue-Gray Game and Senior Bowl after his senior season. Mawae was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.[2]

Leonard Marshall should get mention as D-line.
3 time Pro Bowl selection.

There should be NO argument that Kevin Mawae is the greatest Center to ever play for the Tigers.
Wilkerson won (co-won) the Rimington. I probably take Wilkerson over Mawae if absolutely pressed to. I don't give a hearty f&#k what any of these guys did in the pros - best ever - take Mawae if you want (the only authentic piece of LSU memorabalia I own, other than an autography by Billy Cannon, is a Mawae practice jersey), but to say it is "inarguable" that Mawae is the best center in LSU history may be overstating the case. He played all over the line and was one of the greatest LSU offensive linemen in history. Being the best player on the worst team in modern LSU history (and I'm referring to the 1992 squad, loveable bunch of losers they were) is dubious credentials for a best ever argument.
(He never played on a winning team at LSU.)

#25 JOSH REED....best WR out of LSU, w/ Dwayne Bowe a close second.

you are focused on the quality of the team instead of the quality of the individual player

YA Tittle for QB- Loved Hodson and all the others but he stands out.
Eric Hill At Linebacker was pretty damn good.

I was just qualifying my argument with some support. I think it's clear that Mawae and Wilkerson are the top, perhaps 1 and 1a. If pressed I probably take Wilkerson. I am a big fan of Kevin Mawae.
(ETA: Quality of the team probably kept him off All American rosters, in my opinion.)

Likewise, George Bevan, Mike Anderson, Warren Capone and Bradie James. But none were Michael Brooks.

Consensus best RB is Cannon, obviously.
He won a National championship and the Heisman. He was the best player in college football at that time. For a six game span, Faulk wasnt even the best RB on the team.
Faulk is obviously number 2. Yards leader for lsu, but look at that list of yards leaders for the SEC - all in the modern era. When comparing players across times, you must take this into account.

If you read the thread, I do not believe there is consensus. You are correct about comparing eras. Faulk did not have the supporting cast that Cannon did. Both returned kicks, but Cannon starred on the defensive side of the ball, as well.
Dalton Hilliard gets thrown in the mix, I tossed out the name of Charles Alexander, and I think Stovall (the forgotten LSU RB) deserves mention. Those are 5 choices. I saw 3 of them play in person. My favorite player of the group is Hilliard. The best pure runner I ever saw (other than Barry Switzer:ETA - Obviously I mean Barry Sanders here - whoops) is Charles Alexander.
The best football players I have ever watched play live are Tim Tebow, Derrick Thomas, Michael Brooks, Patrick Peterson and Kevin Faulk, in no particular order. (ETA: and Faneca)

There is no consesus because people are biased to their own time and who they saw.
Posted on 7/7/11 at 1:31 pm to Stingray
The RB and WR debates are just proving my thread's point that there is no concensus at these positions. All of them great players, but unless everybody can crown one player, then it's moot!

Should we split up Middle and Outside Linebackers? There are alot of great names being thrown out.

Maybe - but, I still think you're going to have Brooks for outside, and lots of arguments for ILB.

Well my point is that it seems that saying Cannon is not the clear best because of Faulk is like saying Casanova is not the clear best because of Landry.
