Two from the SEC, Two from the Big 10, One from the Pac 10 and the rest non BCS conference teams
4 from the Mountain West Conference alone: BYU, Utah, SDST, and Air Force.

I would like to see ESPN feature this tourney
That would be great.
ESPNU has shown some games before, but always a tape-delayed replay. Tonight they are showing a Feb 21 game, Cal vs. British Columbia Thunderbirds at 8pm central.

i really did not think rugby players were so fricking sensitive..
Are you kidding? They walk around sporting their Gap Kids polos everyday around the university. I think they like to pretend they're an NCAA team even though it is only club.

I guess the real NCAA sports like golf, tennis, men's volleyball, etc are as equally tough and demanding as rugby?

There is a difference between winning an NCAA National Championship and a club trophy.
There is a difference in being recruited out of high school and being put on scholarship than trying out for a club team.
I hope they do well, but lets be realistic ... it is only club.

I ended up playing only about 4 games because I joined late in the season. At some point I realized my body was not built for rugby and I retired. Unfortunately I forgot my own wisdom and tried to play football again, where I promptly blew out my knee.

The big difference between rugby and any other club sport is that collegiate rugby players actually have a chance to sign a professional contract right out of college.
Cal placed 2 guys last year, 1 to a NY club and another to a South African club. Both guys also already play for the US national team.
All in all 12 collegiate "club" players signed professional contracts last year around the world.
I know it's not many in relation to how many college rugby players there are but I know it is more that any other 'club' sport is placing professionally out of college.
Forgot to add: LSU has 2 guys who have traveled with the US under 19 side and played in the U19 World Cup.

Oh, i definitely have respect for the rugby program .. don't get me wrong. I just hold them in the same regard as club soccer, club wrestling or any other club sport .... it's just club.
I know the guys put a lot of hard work into it though, and i hope they win it all. shite, its a tough game.

great job and bulawayo!
this is a huge achievement for LSU to win the Western RFUs... teams like the Air Force Academy have paid coaches and train daily.
Similarly, rugby at Cal-Berkley is a varsity sport - again big money thrown at those programs.
LSU RFC has its work cut out for them and faces the top programs in the country... a national championship would be equivalent to the miracle on ice.

The big money part is correct but not a varsity sport. They have an unreal alumni program that dumps enough money into the program that allows for grants through the club but not scholarships from the school.
Also, they have 5 academic waivers each year which allows guys who wouldn't normally qualify to get into Cal (brutal school to get into) to get in with the waiver. They pick off the best from HS and even smaller colleges and get them to Cal each year. It is a rugby factory.

The big problem is the lack of funding. Now that LSU has traveled to Greeley, Colorado and won, they have to find the money to get to Berkeley. And if they are fortunate enough to win two games, they have to find a way to get to Stanford for the final 4.

for you all mentioning club sports... for example club soccer (men) - many programs have varsity soccer
varsity rugby programs, e.g. the cal-berkleys, dartmouth, compete with club programs
LSU RFC plays for the love of the game... go watch - these college-age athletes taking this sport very seriously - you'll be impressed with their level of fitness and organization...
bring your wives and girlfriends - they'll like it
