I’ve got a buddy who played at Arizona from 98-02 under both Coach Stit and Lopez and we’ve spoken about the new hire. His father (who also played at AZ and in the MLB) also has a personal relationship with the current AD and boosters and made some of these comments.

The below quotes are his exact words I copied from text messages.

“I think the AD was happy to see him go actually.
They were concerned with the direction of the program. Especially his first year when he made it to the world series with andy Lopez old coach recruits. He was only there for 6 years.
Plenty of questionable game strategies in his tenure.
Athletic director and booster where concerned with him as the head coach. He wasn’t hired by the current AD as well.
He is also very controlling. I think he will probably work out but there will be some questions and questionable calls he makes that gets exploited in LSU.
Game management was questionable. Vandy game with infield semi in. Should have been double play depth. Stanford game right fielder playing left center field and on the warning track almost. There were some questionable calls there at a crucial time. The Vandy was a big time questionable choice.”

On the flip side he admits overall he thinks it’s a good hire and says he’s a good recruiter!

That seems like a pretty ignorant eval honestly. Fans questioning a in game decision? There isnt an unquestionable correct answer to every situation you listed.

Should've could've would've on basically any coach ever that loses a game. You'll always look back and question decisions that's why you lost a game.

the arizona fans i saw all said their ad is a moron and didn't try to keep him because he doesn't care about baseball.

i think their department is struggling though. they're a pac 12 school that has cleaned out their football, baseball, and basketball coach this year.

That’s his opinion vs the AD. He thinks there was a personality conflict between Johnson and current AD.

He’s just laying out his opinion but it doesn’t necessarily mean he still can’t win which he did well this season

He signed like 5 juco guys that year and those recruits didn't make the tournament in the 3 years prior to him getting there.

Seems to be nitpicking. Everyone makes questionable calls at times, so I guess we'll see.

Thanks Stephen!

I feel like any coach that is around long enough makes a few questionable calls that gets exploited. But as we’ve seen the man is already recruiting and that is the lifeblood of the program. Now let’s hire him some good assistants and get back on top!

All of his starters hit over .300 this year, so I’m excited to see a brand of baseball where a 3 run inning by the opposition doesn’t mean we lost.

What a stupid post with comments from a disappointed Arizona fan! Tell me, why did you feel the need to post this from a disgruntled fan? What is he going to say - oh, you stole our favorite coach, can't believe LSU got so lucky, etc.

Yeah, looked like that roster was a band-aid that he did an amazing job with. Not sure what happened the 4 years between. Seems his roster was unbalanced he had to recruit back up so I'm guessing he was left with that? Same as the guy above if you look on the Zona boards they don't seem too happy he's leaving. Didn't look like they wanted him to leave to me.

Why would you go out of your way to omit the positive things your friend said?

No coach is perfect. That Vandy game was extremely well played on both sides.

Also, "direction of the program"? They pulled in the #4 class nationally last year, and unlike us, rode it to the CWS.

Sounds like sour grapes to me.

He’s definitely not disgruntled I can assure you. He thinks LSU fans are beyond crazy passionate including myself. He just doesn’t really care much which I’ll never understand especially from a former player.

I get that gorilla ball is dead in this era but I think from a tradition standpoint, this is a good hire for LSU. When LSU was in their prime the bats is what was the most recognizable here. Sure, you had plenty of stud pitchers but we were called gorilla ball for a reason. I want a team that can rake. LSU was always the most fun to watch when they could smash the cover off the ball. If anything, maybe Woody figured this into the hire because if their bat production is any indication, won't be having many boring moments here.
