When your alarm goes off in the morning drink a beer. By the time you are finished with your shower you should have two empty beers. Cans or bottles are fine, either way. Grab a third for the road on your way out the door. Park as close to the stadium as you can get, and start following the people. Stop at the first tent you see that has all of the following: beer, tv, food (if they have breakfast going they're legit), and close to a bathroom. Then this is the important part say the following: "Hello my name is __________, I'm from NC and this is my first LSU game."
Voila... all your problems are solved instantly.
follow these instructions.
especially the part about how to introduce yourselves.

Try port Allen for hotels and north gate tavern or chimes for bars

I religiously make my reservations a year ahead, for two reasons.
1. I get the pre-jacked up rate.
2. I get in before they impose the 2-day minimum
The new Staybridge on Nichollson is the ideal hotel, close to the motor homes, close to restaurants, park your car and walk to tailgates. I'm in it for the first 3 games, for about $120 for one night -- great deal. Once the hotel got wise, the rate went up to #249 with a 2-night minimum. That's when I moved to the Courtyard on Acadian and got it for one night for the $120'ish rate. Gotta think ahead to get the best arrangements.

You can probably get a Fairfield/Towneplace etc. (Marriott property) right off Essen Lane for around $100. It is close to the Mall of La too if that is of interest.
BR is not big. That is a good area and not far.

Exactly. You will be like a long lost adopted child, showered with hospitality (at the right place). Tiger fans love to show a good time to newbies.
I met a Michigan State fan on the place recently. He told me he travels to college football games and wants to go to LSU.
I told him basically the above and told him to wear his MSU shirt and get a sign or something that said "MSU fan, but Geaux Tigers today!" or something like that.

Almost all of the hotels around Baton Rouge are chain hotels. Stay near I-10 or pretty much anywhere, except the farther you get above I-10 (opposite from campus) you really get out of the LSU area and cross town travel becomes more difficult. Don't take a chance on "Bob's Motel." Book now.

All of the above good advice. Just remember to never NEVER ask, "What is in it?" Just eat it, put out the fire with a beer and tell the cook that it was delicious.

How far of a drive is it from new orleans to lsu campus? We are staying in new orleans friday night and heading to lsu on Sat. morning..

hour/hr half depending on traffic

Leave EARLY. Party hard in the Big Sleazy on Friday night, turn it over to the designated driver, and nap on the way here. Get to the campus early if you want to find parking close to the action.

Oops.
I suggest skipping the tailgating. Get sub sandwiches and a bottle of bourbon and eat in the car.

Haha, I'm thinkin about just gettin smashed beforehand and sayin, "frick it, i'll eat it" and worry about the taste later

The only bad thing is that the UT is almost certainly going to be at 2:30 on CBS. They have a double header that day and and Florida at Bama is projected to be the Primetime telecast. Since it's going to be a day game, I would definitely arrive on campus by around 9:00 or 9:30 at the latest. After the game, go to the bars just off campus or go eat at The Chimes East and watch the UF/Bama game.
You could leave BR about 10:00 that night and be in the French Quarter by 11:30 or so. Yuk it up for a few more hours, sleep in and then mozy on over to the Dome and be ready for a boring pro football game.

Wear purple pants, a tiger striped sports coat, and a tiger tail.

That sounds like a plan...I was hoping to see a night game...but day or night...it will be better than my options in NC.

You are catching on already.

And the taste of the food will be awesome. By the time you get home you will be craving Tobasco, Crystal or Louisian Hot Sauce.
