BR isn't a college town.

Palo Alto, CA - Stanford
are all pretty great "college towns" and that is just w/in the state of California.
In my opinion, the home of the Banana Slugs, UC Santa Cruz does not hold a candle to the beauty of any of the aforementioned locales. It is essentially a series of rustic high school looking buildings hidden in a forest.
All that being said, Baton Rouge, LA is a pretty damned great college town because LSU is located there.

Palo Alto = San Fran..IMHO
La Jolla/San Diego

Not better, but different. Natchitoches is a neat small college town, with a lot of character and charm.

Monroe absolutely sucks as a college town. Wasn't always that way, but is now.

I'm an Alabama fan and and i'm not being baised against LSU when i say this. I lived in BR for 7 yrs growing up and i just never liked it. There are alot of college towns better than BR.

Baton Rouge aint a college town, but the sure aint shite to do there if it weren't for LSU. That makes it a college town IMO.
Like others have said...I lived in Baton Rouge for a while, and shite if you dropped me there in the Spring time during no football, I swear I'd try to move out as fast as I could.

The only thing that makes LSU seem like a college town is our bad arse tailgates. Bar scenes are Eh and were pretty much the only college town with out a 5 points (or 5 corners.)
I would have to say Athens was my favorite college town. I had a blast this year when we made the trip.

I think you'd have to narrow the question. I've been to almost every college town in the South. Unlike most other towns, Baton Rouge isn't "just" a college town. Unlike, for example Auburn, it has other elements that make it difficult to compare. The chemical plant/bluecollar aspect and state government are 2 things that no other college town, save for Columbia, has. If you're comparing true college towns, i.e. the school is really all there is, I'd say Baton Rouge doesn't compare well to Athens, Oxford or Auburn. Athens & Oxford are probably the best SEC college towns there are. Unfortunately, unless you're a prof or a Dickie Scruggs, you can't really live there.
Compared to T-Town, I would give the edge to BR (I'm from there & have never lived in T-Town, but in Birmingham so have spend time there). As far as living in the city, Baton Rouge is much better because it has other aspects, whereas T-Town to me isn't very well organized. Campus-wise, I think LSU is much prettier and also easier to navigate, UA is too spread out for my tastes (fraternity row, for example, is pretty out of the way). The great thing about UA, however, is they have the best development around the campus that I've experienced. The area between LSU & downtown BR is a complete eyesore & its just a shame that something can't be done to develop that area. FRed's & Bogies should move and open a location closer to campus.
My thoughts.

This.
I cannot believe how many people put Nashville on their lists. Nashville is not a college town.
EDIT: No way is New Orleans a college town.
I saw someone else put Dallas on the list. Ha! I live close enough to SMU to hear the loud speaker during the football games, and I've never once been caught in a traffic jam for a game. This city hardly notices SMU.
I often refer to BR as a college town, but, really, like Austin, there are other things going on that make the "college town" title not fit so much.
But if you define the term "college town" to mean that the rest of the country associates the town with the college--South Bend and State College come to mind, then, in that sense, Baton Rouge is a college town.
