A thread where just about everybody looks at this situation like it should. There are people all the time leaving colleges when they are "recruited" by companies. On the job training and incredible pay, for shame on those very lucky people. The second/third round guys can come in and make more money in one year than most people in 10+ years after graduating college.

The get a degree argument is dumb. You can take your millions and go back to school without the pressure of playing football.

No more 4 years of watching a top-tier college athlete excel at their respective schools. It's a 3 year plan now - particularly if they have a great redshirt sophomore or junior season. Sure would like to see these kids stay in school and get a degree along with enjoying their senior season with all the accolades and enjoyment of college life. Oh well.... the good old days are gone. It's become the norm - specifically at LSU. Makes me respect the seniors that are great players even more. They are few and far between.
Can't you be happy that the NFL mandates that a kid has to wait for 3 years post-graduation before he can enter the draft. It could be a lot worse--like college basketball's one and done.
And I would never want an LSU kid--one who made a commitment to the university despite all of the stupid recruiting shite, all of the negative stuff that goes on during that process that this fanbase has witnessed in the last couple of months--to come back to play for nothing, get hurt, have his draft stock drop, etc.
I want as many LSU football players as possible to go on to the NFL, make a ton of money, and when asked about his college experience, respond like PP7 and TM7: that LSU is family and they'd do it again if they could.

Looks who's the selfish a-hole now. Would you prefer for them to end up like Matt Leinhart? He stayed back for USC and barely made the Draft.

the fact of the matter is that an nfl caliber player that leaves as a jr. probably has more playing time than one that stays thru his senior year..
if tw16 starts for the next two years and goes pro he will have more playing time than corey Webster did staying his 4 years....
plus the way the nfl is set up you can get almost as much money as a 4th round pick as the 2nd round pick does....

Some of these kids watch their momma struggle, some of them don't have dads, some of them have kids, some of them been broke their whole life. You need to check yourself before you start evaluating why these kids aren't staying.

the sport of football is a trainwreck waiting to happen. if you have next level ability the wise move is to max the opportunity and prepare a solid plan for life after sport. every time I read one of these posts I think about Ciron Black. if a kid has given us three years of his life then it's his and his family's call...not ours.

I don't mind that NFL ready players leave LSU. I just wonder at the ones who aren't really nfl ready leaving early, and I wonder why LSU seems hit harder with early departures than other big programs. If 2012 was an anomaly then fine, but if its the new norm then something is wrong.

Actually, freshmen were eligible to play varsity sports in 1972,

and get a degree
Sports Management degrees get you an unpaid internship with the Corpus Christi Hooks AA minor league baseball team, if you're lucky.
Probably 75% of LSU's football team majors in athletics essentially.

The fact that LSU is losing so many underclassmen (again) simply means the coaches are consistently recruiting top talent.

I think you meant Barkley, but perfect example. He was considered a LOCK for top 10 pick and some people thought #1 overall. He came back, his team stunk it up, and he went in the fourth round. Coming back gave them another year to evaluate his flaws (weak arm, etc). He literally cost himself over 10 million dollars in contract money and 9-10 more million in signing bonus money.
His one mistake to come back cost him a low ball estimate of 19 MILLION DOLLARS. Maybe he gets better and makes some money, but he has an uphill battle now instead of making enough money to sustain him for life.

I never have understood this mentality of fans. Why do people go to college? To make a better life for themselves. If after three years I was able to make hundreds of thousands of dollars and in some cases millions playing football vs playing for free to me that's a no brainer. Go make the money. You can always finish school afterwards for the after ball career.

Then why not drop the college sports program . make as it really is simi pro ?

The real losers are the people who have a problem with college players trying to reach their dreams of playing in the NFL. They dont owe you or LSU anything.

People are missing the reason of college here. It is an avenue to prepare you for your career.
Universities aren't running big time athletic programs to put a handful of student scholars into the pros. They are doing it for money for the universities.
College football is a big business it is no longer a supplemental part of an academic environment.

Yeah it's a product of the NFL rookie salary cap. It's no longer about draft status but about longevity. At the same time it was hard to understand when Jake Long got drafted and became one of if not the highest paid OL without ever having played a down. I'm sure there was a happy medium but the NFL satisfied the Union.
