The way Hess was pitching last night in the upper 90s with that nasty curve I would have a hard time not switching him to the closer roll from here on.

Oh and CC was legit last year!

Having Hess in the closer role makes a lot of sense.

As for last year, Coastal was a solid program who had been to the Supers before. Just because Coastal and Stony Brook were not household names it does not diminish the fact that both teams were not talented those years. There were 7 or 8 players off of each team drafted.

There is this football mentality when it comes to baseball that clouds a lot people's judgement.

This. They went into #1 Miami's regional and didn't lose. Beat Cal St. Fullerton in Omaha.

Chicago Cubs--predicted, but breaking a 108 year drought is still notable

Cleveland Cavs--break a 52 year championship drought for any sports franchise.

I'll add to it that the Cubs and Cavs both overcame 3-1 deficits in their series. Also, the Patriots overcame a 28-3 second half deficit to win the super bowl.

You could also add that the CFB Title game was decided on a game winning TD pass with 1 second to play and the 2016 NCAA Bball tournament was won a buzzer beater by Villanova.

Pretty ridiculous year for sports

Coastal also moved from the Big South conference to the Sun Belt and this was their first year competing in the Sun Belt. They also lost their first game of the sun belt conference double elimination tournament and then it starts raining and the conference just decides to change the tournament to single elimination which shut the door for the conference's regular season champs, Coastal. As LSU fans you also know that every team Coastal played would lose a finger just to say they beat the reigning National Champion. Coastal was also on an 11 game win streak heading into the tournament. It didn't help that 4 conference tournaments we're won by teams not expected to. Coastal just missed out. As far as biggest Cinderella Coastal has to be at least 2nd. The Citadel didn't win anything and just bc Davidson makes the CWS doesn't mean much. Coastal winning it in their first appearance makes them at least 2nd. Someone said Fresno St had been to the CWS 3 times. If that's true then I'd put Coastal over them. I'm sure you can't be from a much smaller town than Conway, SC with a population around 15,000 ppl.. Houston has more ppl than the entire state of SC plus you have SCar and Clemson cleaning up most recruits. Cali only has what 40 million ppl to SC's 4. Also last year's Coastal team was probably not as good as their 2010 team that lost in the supers to future NC SCar basically bc Coastal was without their 3 best pitchers for entire series against SCar due to the flu and SCar running over their 3rd best pitchers in the first inning of game one. The other 2 were All Americans. That made it that much sweeter to see Coastal win it all. Coastal should get better now that they are a D1 school instead of a D2 school except in baseball like last year

Coastal Carolina was favored by many analysts in the Super Regional at the Box. Though it was improbable that they would win the whole thing (just look at the Vegas odds) its difficult to label them as a "Cinderella" team. They certainly weren't a fringe tourney team at the end of the season.

The Fresno St. natty is much more convincing as a "Cinderella" run. They barely made the tourney and then lost at every level of it before clawing back and winning the whole thing. I understand the program had some pedigree and they were ranked preseason, but its only fair to judge them based on the season that they had in my book. Still, the school had never won a men's championship in ANY sport other than tennis in 1968.

Coastal Carolina was pretty statistically dominant last year throughout, in spite of their relative unknown status in CBB among casual fans. Fresno struggled that season and has only made 3 tourneys since. CC lost 18 games; Fresno lost over 30. It's really not close.

2008 Fresno State....

Was basically the very last team selected. 4 seed to win it all. That's the basketball equivalent of a 16 seed winning it all. Absolutely impossible but somehow happened.

The Citadel in 1990 had an unbelievable run to even get to Omaha.

They lost to us twice, but still, what the hell were they even doing in the CWS?

Their run, along with San Jose State in 2000, was just improbable and ESPN should do a 30 for 30 on it but only show it at 12:30am EST on ESPNU.

Coastal Carolina just doesn't seem to fit the definition of "Cinderella" besides the fact that they were relatively unknown, IMO. College baseball fans knew about them and were known to be a legit team. Also known to be an up and comer. They had a great season from the start with really good talent all over the field.

Fresno State was a preseason top 25 team but they weren't even close to one during the season. They weren't very good at all the whole season and only made the tourney because of winning their conference tourney. They then went on to scratch through the regionals and supers away from home and lost a game in each. Then did the same in the CWS. They had no business making the tourney, much less winning the National Championship but they pulled it off.

Fresno State was underdogs in every single game they played during the postseason. Coastal Carolina wasn't underdogs like Fresno State. This is all just my opinion but I don't see Coastal as near the Cinderella as Fresno State.
