Horrible analogy.
I am forced to pay taxes. Ticket sales are a luxury and are entertainment.
Do you care what Lady GaGa does with her money when you buy a concert ticket?
What about a Broadway musical? You buy a ticket, do you bitch about how much the producer makes?
What about movies? What about professional sports?

So, do you think that if they would have hired a coach for $100,000, or even disbanded the entire women's basketball program, that your season tickets would decrease?
No, but why should my costs go up to pay for a program that doesn't draw flies........even when they're winning?
How in the hell does that make the baseball coach feel who's won a national championship in a revenue generating sport, but is making less?

Our white boyz whipped azz in Europe tho. Extend the beak!

Since when did baseball coaches get paid like basketball coaches?

You're costs are not going up for Trent or Nikki's salary. Don't kid yourself. Your football ticket costs are going up based on where the ticket pricing is set at Alabama, Florida, Nebraska, Ohio State, etc...

So PM should make more money than Bo Pelini or Will Muschamp because he has won a national title and they haven't? That's ludicrous. PM gets paid at the top percent of other college baseball coaches. You are crossing markets.

I can guarantee you that since Skip Bertman has been at LSU the baseball coach has never made less than the womens basketball coach.

I'm not opposed to it, but it is definitely pre-mature. If he can't win with "his players," or at least show us that he might be able to win, we shouldn't be throwing an extension his way
Posted on 7/15/11 at 4:34 pm to Beef Supreme
Bottom line: Johnson deserves no extension. Anyone who argues oterwise is being dumb. Screw ticket prices. Compare salaries per win and TJ is already raping every other coach in Murca. Talk about an extension when we see 8 conference wins.

If only the Lithuanian School for Boys were in the SEC.

I have never understood why fans get so uptight over coaches' salaries and contracts. It's not your money.

I found it interesting that the local sports media buried this at the bottom of an article about Women's basketball
Posted on 7/15/11 at 8:23 pm to 756
I agree. That's the news in that article, not the approval of Nikki's already announced contract. Horrible reporting.

but aren't you glad they had her picture for you to look at instead of TJ'sS

I find this to be an interesting thread. Number one I do think fans have a right to question how much coaches make. Without fans there is no revenue and without revenue there are no salaries let alone very high ones. Of course just because we have a right to speak out doesn't mean anyone in the athletic department will listen.
Number two it is also easy to forget that LSU is not a semi-pro team but a state institution. Tax money may not pay for salaries directly but it certainly is a factor. Who owns the stadium and the PM Center and the land they sit on? How much of the overhead (insurance, utilities, security, accounting, legal) is paid for by the athletic dept. out of self generated funds and how much by the University from other funds?
Given all that I do think Trent should get a one year extension. It is not a pay raise, just an extension. I think he deserves it for winning the SEC his first year. And don't give me that crap about he did it with another coaches players. If you are an incompetent coach you don't win the SEC no matter how many great players you have on the team. Go back and see how many times we have won the SEC in basketball. By my count, since 1935, we have only won 11 out of 76. Only six of those were sole out right champions. The others were co-championships. Since 1990 there have only been two sole championships of the regular season. Since the conference tournament started in 1979 we have won only once.
The legitimate knock on Trent has been that he did not bring in enough mature players for his second and third years. I was astounded that he didn't bring in any JC players. This was a huge mistake and I would hope he would agree with that now.
Building a program is one thing but you should never write off a whole season to do it. Last year, without injuries to Storm and Ralston, and a few lucky bounces and fewer turnovers, I think we could have won six or seven SEC games.
Those of you who say Trent can't coach are just crazy. No coach can prevent players from not carrying out what he has taught them. And that has been a lot of the problem the last two years. Execution of what they have been taught. Turnovers and sloppy ball handling and passing will kill you!
Hopefully the recruiting knock will quiet down if the quality players we have coming in perform as advertised. But remember, now those guys will be freshmen. Some players can make the adjustment to college ball with no trouble but others need a year to get up to speed. That is another reason why I think he should get the one year extension. Now that he has some quality recruits and last year's freshmen will have a year of experience, let him have them for at least two years to see what he can do.
After that if he hasn't shown improvement, then I agree it is time for him to go.

Fans and Alumni don't want a contract extension for a coach that could very well end up being shite canned at the end of the season. TJ is very close to being labeled with the "Incompetent/Bad Hire/Not the right fit" label and Alleva wants a contract extension.
Posted on 7/16/11 at 1:53 pm to I Speak As I Please
I would sure like for the local sports media to step up to the plate and ask Aleva what his thought process was
