A well executed one is usually hit b/w 1st and 2nd if you are a RHB. They teach this on every level. It's not that difficult to understand the purpose is to hit it in the area that the if is most likely vacating to cover second. 3rd basemen never covers second

Also, those saying Rhymes didn't do his job are completely wrong.

Who's bitching about Raph? The kid did what he was told to do.

exactly
the anticipation of a potential bunt was the killer, but there's nothing you can do there
The call was not a bad call....the execution was not bad....the luck was.

Correct. I think the only thing being pointed out here is that it still would have been successful if he had just hit a groundball to SS, because Katz would have been safe. Obviously, if he got a single to RF, Katz would have gone to third and that would have been much more successful, but the hit and run could have still been successful without going the other way. He hit it to just about the worst spot on the diamond.

A perfectly executed hit in run is a line drive in the gap. Rhymes was trying to drive that ball.

I don't know why people think the hitter's sole objective on a hit and run is to punch it through the vacated position at 2nd base.

So where is a LHB supposed to hit it?

Gap between 3rd and 2nd is good with the SS moving to cover the bag.

In a perfect world of course

I'm sure this thought never crossed the minds of anyone in the dugout. Coaches or players. If only there was a baseball mind in that dugout that would point out just how simple hitting is, we would have crushed Plutko last night.

a left hander opens up a different hole when the SS covers second.

Holy shite you couldn't be more wrong. The reason you put the runner in motion is to OPEN up holes in the infield for the HITTER to hit GROUND BALLS through

It's a grounder behind the runner. Raph tried to pull a pitch outside the strike zone. Did you see his face when camera panned on him? He knew he failed to execute. Raph is a great example of LSU baseball and hope Tigers get the Omaha magic to win the CWS.

maybe in HS
at high level with better pitching, hitters are taught to put the ball on the ground.
If it's a fastball away, the SS is likely covering the steal anyway and a sharp hit ball to 2B is still a DP possibility
