Nobody was going on either set of days.

it is a matter of policy...
LSU is off the hook whether anyone shows up or not.

Will be interesting to see what LSU does if we have a wintry weather event and ice with roads closed. Cancel classes and students have to make it up on another Saturday?

Don't they kind of have to do this? Doesn't accreditation require a certain number of scheduled instruction hours? On top of that, some classes and curricula really are gonna need those Saturday hours just because the schedule was already full and there's no fluff in the schedule to be able to take up for the missing hours.

The university will say "We'll make those up on Saturday [WINK] [WINK]", and the professors and students will work it out among themselves as needed based on the needs of each class.

EDIT: I didn't even think about all the federal and financial aid stuff that guy up there talked about.

Yes, if you saw the Press Release after the LSU BOS voted to cancel classes for 13 and 14 January, there was a statement in there telling you the University would set up makeup days. There was something to the effect, the University Registrars office is working on ad

Here is the exact quote:

The University Registrar is currently working to update the university’s academic calendar, as the cancellation will likely require scheduling make-up days. The cancellation may also impact milestone dates throughout the semester, such as the last day to drop without receiving a grade of “W” and the last day to add a class. LSU will share all updates to the academic calendar as soon as possible so that students and faculty can plan accordingly."

Now the "likely" is a nice way of saying there will be a makeup unless the cancellation did not impact what I suggested above.

Sometimes in a semester, 29 contact days are available in a 14 week schedule, so 1 miss will not cause a problem. But if your in a class on 13 January, there are already Monday holidays for King Day, Monday before Mardi Gras. Tuesday classes, well, you miss Mardi Gras already, so that would be a problem. My guess is the registrars did the calculations and the decision was made that the makeup days have to be "Officially scheduled". If students choose not to attend or how instructors choose to makeup the class of course will vary.

Uh, yeah. What did they expect would happen?

Everyone clamored for class cancellation. You got your wish.

They'd probably start cutting into spring break

They did this a couple years ago. All 5 of my professors didn't make us come in, and one of them made it bonus if we came in. The teachers hate it too

Yeah they did this during the Katrina semester.

I thought they ended up pushing finals back a week. I recall there being talk of Saturday make ups, but since it was the Fall semester/football season, that was never going to fly.

Either way, there is little chance that these classes actually end up being held. While true that 45 contact hours are required for a 3 credit class, nothing says those contact hours have to be face-to-face.

I called this from the jump.

It wasn't hard. It's logical. No one will be adversely affected in their lives other than not getting drunk on a Friday night or driving home to Mommy & Daddy on a weekend.
Yes, there are people who work during school. They'll have to pick up different shifts. No life changing. And IF it is a major financial problem-a student can easily work with their professors.

They’re literally doing this just to say “frick you” because people care more about a national championship than class

They have to have a minimum amount of class time to maintain accreditation. If people are going to cry about needing two days off to watch a football game, they're also probably going to cry about having either the Mardi Gras or spring break cut short.

This is what the non-dumbasses among us knew would happen and should have been the call from the get go.

I remember this happening when i was at LSU. Some professors had class, a few people showed, and the professor gave bonus points to those who did.

I had work, so I did not attend.

All the people saying just dont show up: why couldn't the students do that Monday and Tuesday instead of demanding that class be cancelled?
