Gets frustrating how Sam Houston is discounted.

Level of competition maybe? SH head coach even said the week leading up to the game that there's no way he would have LSU on his schedule if it were up to him.

Why don't we slow down about calling this a better defense. We have played Wisconsin and 2 cream puffs. We couldn't stop Wisconsin's run game and they had a pretty bad QB.

We would have stopped him anyway because at that point, LSU sold out to the run and forced Wisky to pass.

So far our secondary is lights out. Everyone has been making plays. If you recall, last year, the defense struggled making plays even against teams like UAB. I know we haven't played top competition, but what we've done so far is far different from last season.

We just gotta keep a healthy DT rotation.

Wisky's QB was not horrible in the passing game?

He was horrible versus us..

I don't think he was a great qb but when he played a team not named LSU his stats looked something like..

23\29 (83%) for 283 yards and 3 TDs.

I don't think we've had many QBs in our history throw for a stat line similar to that one but what do I know. amirite?

We gave up 17 points and ~300 yards to a HORRIBLE UAB team last year.

We gave up 13 points and 250 yards to an ALSO HORRIBLE Kent State team.

Take that FWIW.

I just wish we would hold off until SEC play before calling this Defense elite or vastly improved. I'm optimistic but I have to see us go up against better competition before crowning them.

Yeah, I don't know why our fanbase can't be happy about shutting out two consecutive opponents. When was the last time that happened? It's not like LSU just started playing cupcakes this year.

We had a good 2nd half against a good Wisky team who played with a shitty QB and without their best RB
How do you know Wisconsin's QB is shitty? His statistics from Wisconsin's next game were 23 passes completed in 28 attempts for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns. Those aren't the statistics of a shitty QB. Could it be that it is too early to say McEvoy is a shitty QB, just as you claim it is too early to tell how good LSU's defense really is?

Obviously this isn't for certain and I don't see anyone saying the D is certainly elite or certainly vastly improved. There are signs pointing in that direction, though, and I don't know why people can't just be happy that our defense APPEARS to be at least significantly better than last year.

I think the difference was that LSU started run-blitzing in the 2nd half.

After LSURulzSEC's post, the rest of this conversation is mute. All of LSU's other great defenses played cream puffs early in the season also, and NONE of them had as much success as this team. So yes, we can begin to proclaim them to be on that level. Way to go Chavis!

Came here to make similar observations.

I could tell that our defense was going to be in trouble last year watching those two games. Sure, the games were never, ever in doubt, but those teams moved the ball at will at times. It's a different story this year. The cupcakes are getting completely stonewalled.

This is my point- even some of the best defenses in the last 20 years havent been able to do this. Last time LSU defense pitched two straight shut-outs, I believe was 1941.

Really? Guess you haven't looked at his carriers in the second half. It's not like he didn't play in the second half.

take a breath, people.

We haven't played anyone yet with a decent offense. Yes, I'm counting Wisconsin (they have an awful QB), but they were gashing us in the first half.

If we're still shutting teams down after playing Auburn, Bama, Ole Miss, and A&M, then I'll agree we have something special on D.

But not now. Way way too early.
