For one... The long list of Budget Cuts on the way.

With the new SEC ESPN/CBS contract kicking in this year, LSU will make millions.

quote:Yep. How short memories are. People also forget LSU fans were calling Saban's hire a dismal failure after we lost to UAB at home.
Think about Pelini, he had top 10 defenses EVERY freaking year at LSU.
Yeah...and everyone wanted HIM fired too. This place is out of control with ignorance.

Pelini adjusted his defenses after the horrible start in 2005. After that nobody bitched until 2007 when our DL started sucking as soon as Dorsey and Alexander went out. That was entirely on Les' hire of a pure recruiter to coach our DL.
Our defense was otherwise stout that year, and most knew it. We were also one of the two most talented teams in the country that year and overall well coached. Not coming off a 5 loss season.

I am just worried about our defense doing what Chavis's defenses have done at Tennessee. They will be good, ok, great, mediocre, poor, bad, and everything in between. It is not like they lacked the players at UT the past 5-6 years of Chavis tenure there.

Just small talk with a booster. Not too sure.
Yet you stated it as FACT. Nice job their buddy.

My mistake. See my next post

The fact that Georgia was willing to pony up $600K for Chavis means we needed to match to keep him. I like my job but if someone gave me a $100K raise I'd seriously entertain it but give my present employer a chance to match. I'm glad we are keeping him. We will be better next year and he will develop our younger players. I do not want to be rolling the dice on a new coach right now.

Here's my thing. BelowPar has been dead on about what has been happening with the coaching changes. Things have been dynamic and changed, yet he's the only LSU person who said that Chavis was even talking with UGA.
That said, he stated that LSU may not be willing to fire Crowton because of his ~$1M buyout. If that's true and they aren't comfortable paying that out, do we think they'll pay half that, plus all the other assistants and Miles' bloated contract? Yet we just added likely $1.2 M to our buyout amounts for the coaches because Chavis had a good not great year.

From my talk over Christmas with people connected within LSU. We have never had to dip into the athletic budget, but this might have to change.
Also, The cuts are more than LSU can sustain. That means tenured staff being let go. Plus we are looking at dropping tiers after we just earned tier 1 status. This is not good. The only schools in the SEC that aren't tier 1 to my knowledge are the two Mississippi schools(I may be missing one or two)

And if a competitor was willing to offer my above average employee much more than I think their worth, I am not going to match that shite. I dictate what I think of my employee. I don't let other companies tell me if my employee is worth it.
Richt is going after Chavis as a last resort as they've been turned down (albeit quietly) by several choices before him.

Well, yeah. Exactly right. LSU thinks Chavis is worth it. If they didn't, they would let him walk.
It's like everyone thinks the AD is run by barely functional monogoloids. They don't pay a guy if they don't think he's worth it. Obviously, they do.

Hope you never get a job with any real responsibility. You don't have a clue. Were you a fly on the wall and know the whole story???

This a great board! It keeps all of the stupid posters in one place.

The athletic department provides millions of its surplus funds EVERY YEAR to the general operating fund of the university. Most of the surplus is generated by football. In 2007, football had a $31.7 million surplus, most of which was used to subsidize money-losing sports, such as gymnastics, golf, soccer, etc.
Scrimping on a couple of hundred thousand dollars to keep a proven defensive coordinator would be stupid.

Baloo, I agree that its LSU's discretion, but he wasn't going to get that raise two weeks ago. Why is he all of a sudden worth it now when UGA comes calling?
Chavis is a good coach, but I don't think he's worth more than Charlie Strong for God's sake. The dude made LESS than Chavis did this year and had coached 2 NC defenses in the past 4 years.
We played the stupid game and LSU is panicking largely because Les is horribly overpaid and LSU is stuck with him.
