but the only problem is that it takes about 3 years to install a complete defensive system.
Most fans would settle for a good defense and not a great one this year.

I just don't think Chavis is the best we could've hired. I would've like to have gotten someone younger with more upside....and up and comer eager and hungry
I think what Les did with the hires, notice "Hires." Chief, Brick and Coop all have the Coaching Experience that this team needed. Keeping an eye on that side of the ball during the Spring game, showed that these guys have meshed well. Joe Rob is also a holdover from last years staff.
I made this post a few weeks back.....

Got a report from a good friend that has been to the scrimmages. The defense looks like that of old. Flying to the ball, knowing assignments, knowing where to be, making reads, etc. The down linemen and backs are looking good with Brick and Cooper. Chief has a good control of what its takes to get these guys to make plays. They will be fun to watch this year.
Like I said, no one broke anything long in the Spring game. That should tell people something.

I agree. And even with no blitzes, corners contained the run after catch. WRs were pretty much blanketed and tackled immediately. I miss that part of the defense.

The defensive side of the ball has a major upgrade. Looking at the Spring game w/o blitzes and stunts. They gave up no big plays
I'm optimistic but I'm not counting anything based on a spring game. Les don't show anything in spring and gives a lot of spin when talking to the media.

Not if you're simplifying an existing one, which is something both Miles and Chavis have been quoted as saying.
The focus this year is eliminating the mass substitutions of last year and less reads, more attack.
Recall how much Alabama improved from 2007 to 2008, with a great deal of first-year players starting on defense.

No one looked to the sidelines, looked lost, or looked out of place. Made good reads. I like what they are doing, getting the best 11 on the field.

Coop has done very well with them.

And remember people, that this isn't your average garden-variety offense the defense has been going up against all spring.
LSU is returning all but two starters...Tolliver was the starter at WR after Byrd got demoted...off the 4th highest scoring offense in the SEc last year.
AFAIK the LSU offense did NOT score on the 1st string defense until the staff started the offense on the 50 yard line.
What the LSU D has done against a LOADED offense in spring is cause for great optimism!

For whatever it's worth, I just hope our fans don't expect too much this coming fall. It's obvious LSU should be much better, but 2010 is realistically much more likely to be our season. Either way, we will definitely see major improvements for '09.

Curious who you see winning the west over LSU? Ole Miss will be tough I grant you, but I'm not sipping the Tide Kool Aid at all this year.

You're talking about LSU fans. We've come to expect an awful lot and most of us will likely be a bit unrealistic in our expecttions, hence my temporing of the deifying of Chavis.
I think 9-3 is reasonable and realistic. Anything more is gravey, but I can see 10-2.
Anything less IMHO would be a bit disappointing.

If you watched any of Tennessee football last year their offense could barely complete a forward pass and they still finished either 1st or 2nd in the league in total defense. That's exremely impressive given the fact he had his hands tied with a horrible offense plus he will be working with better players this year at LSU>

They finished 1st with the UT offense dead last in TOP.

I just want to win. I feel like we can with Chavis. If we can't, goodbye Chavis.

I could definitely see LSU winning the West, but I do not believe this our year to win the SECCG and national championship. Next year there will be no doubt that LSU will be in the running for it all, if health and off-field discipline permits.

Neither are as good as Saban!
See ther last two games Saban coached at LSU to see why he IS overrated as a gameday coach.

Chavis is solid but not spectacular. The Tenn fans were complaining and warning us to be aware of the "3rd and Chavis". I think we will see alot of 'prevent' bullshite defense like bend but don't break, similar to Pelini. That's what got everyone all bent out of shape about Pelini in the first place. I think it will be more of the same, but anythings better than last years clusterfrick.
