Solid DC with lots of SEC experience. Definitely an upgrade.

But I must admit, whenever we played Tennessee, and their teams of 2000 and 20001 were loaded with NFL talent on the defensive side of the ball...I was never the least bit scared of their defense.

And I remember us even laughing at their lack of adjustment to us basically running the QB option/draw pretty much the whole second half as we were one dimensional with Mauck a green QB.

Certainly better than Malveto. Certainly a solid veteran.

But I'm reading alot of folks who are elevating him to a status that I don't know that he's ever quite achieved as a DC.

Of course many were touting Pellini as the best DC in the country a few years back and IMHO he was never in that argument.

I guess it's a "he's one of us". And that's O.K.

a DC is only as good as his players and as good as he teaches them to play. Does that make sense?

With the consistent level of talent at LSU, and Gary Crowton as offensive coordinator ( with a semi-experience QB), we need a "Solid" DC to be on the national title discussion year in and year out. I believe the Chief can be that guy.

Did you happen to see how pretty much every sec team laughed at LSU's D last season?

I saw every game. If we would have had a "solid" DC last year (The Chief), that would not have happened.

Of course it does, which is why I reference that talented Tennessee team of 2001 and never adjusting to what we were doing...which was very simple.

It was not to cast Chavis as an idiot, but to temper some of the unrealstic and lofty accolades heaped upon a good guy and a solid coach.

Yeah and I was crying.

I did say "upgrade" and "solid".

Exactly. Sure Pelini finished #3 in Defense 3 years runnin, but it was all done with smoke & mirrors according to teh Rant.

So you think Pellini was among the best DC's?

I still remember the last half of 2007 where our defense would have cost us a shot at the MNC if not for very fortunate dominoes falling all around us. We won despite our defense from the second half of the USC game on.

I remember the Arizona St. game and the second half of the Tennesse game his first year and playing 3 down in Gainesville in 2006. I could go on.

Never said he was bad, nor have I said Chavis is bad. Both were/are solid.

Just IMHO not among the elite. Both good enough if you have a good offense (which we always did when Pelline was there and will while Chavis is here) and talent to work with (which IMHO we had more than anyone under Pellini and will again under Chavis.)

Just because I won't tout them among the top 5 (and I don't) doesn't mean either are/were bad.

Just being practical and realistic IMHO.

I actually think the best of the DC's are actually head coaches who really run thier defenses and their DC's are just figureheads.

Carrol, Stoops and Saban. I'd put Mickey Andrews up there too. And I know most have universally panned Chizik at Auburn but I think he'll prove to be that at Auburn...that dude was a very good DC IMHO.

Fire away!!

I think Chavis is a solid hire...familiar with the SEC...players love to play for him. And a big positive for us---he knows linebacking--which has been our weekness. And when you add one of the best cornerback coaches in Cooper and DL coach in Haley...it all adds up to a very promising defense. I think teams are gonna have a very tough time passing the ball on LSU.

I hope our front seven can do the job stuffing the run.
