I was there with Cholly Mac and his .740 winning percentage was good enough by most standards, except he couldnt beat the Bear.
Good man, good coach, but not a great coach.

Charlie Mac was a better coach than Miles..
He directed and controlled the program.
Just a different era and the game changed..it was not being stubborn, The game just changed and I do not think he knew how to recruit/motivate the new players to go along with the changes and therefore the game did not change for him.
Charlie Mac = Tom Landry
same identical thing happened to both.
NOTE: We also played fewer games, not to mention fewer Bowl games.

Miles could help his own cause by never ever speaking in public.

Charlie Mac made many recruiting mistakes.
Lots of problems with Charlie Mac and to call him Tom Landry is absurd. Coach Landry, whom I met on several occasions, was mythical in his stature and status. I just don't see the comparisons on or off the field.

put the Ole Miss loss behind you. Miles is not going to be fired . . . this year Alabama and Florida had better teams. We should have beaten Ole Miss, but we came up short that day. That is reality
Too much sanity for the Rant.

I think much of what you say is correct. One difference is that Coach Mac never really made any staff changes - his offensive coordinator when he left was the one he had when he started with. Miles is willing to change - heck, his clock management in the Arkansas game was far better than the ole missy game. I think next year is the key.

Who did beat the Bear consistently and why didn't we hire him?
Assuming that you want to see Miles replaced tell me who is it that beats Meyer, Saban and Nutt consistently? Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Miles is a great coach but he's only a few breaks away from having a winning record, head to head against all three of them. I'm telling you know, you Miles hater better be careful what you wish for. Most rational fans would be ecstatic to have a coach with an .820 winning percentage in the toughest conference in America, yearly bowl blowouts and keeping his players out of trouble with the law. All of you idiots that think Miles can't coach a football team because of how he comes across in an interview must be the same people that were impressed with Obama's eloquence and mistook it for sound political policy.

Do you think Miles and Charlie Mac are the same type of coach (good but not great?) Also, how many of you felt badly when CM was let go?
I see similarities in the situations. Both are above average but rarely much better than that. Both have (or had) a nemesis at Alabama. I feel like the game passed them both by at some point.
I was happy when Charlie Mac was fired but I was also sad. On one hand, I knew LSU would never be a great team with him at the helm. I felt like he was a good coach but that we could be better with someone else. This is approximately how I feel about Les. But I also felt sad that a man that bled purple and gold as much as any fan or student was being told that he could no longer coach his team. I don't really feel that way about Miles at all.

I was and still am a big CM fan. That being said, I can not remember anyone having a winning record against Bama when Bear was the coach. There were fewer restrictions on recruiting numbers and Bryant would take kids sometimes just to keep Auburn or another SEC foe from them and sit the kid on the bench for four years. Remember, a lot of Saban's success is with Shula's players, not to say that Saban is not a good coach. But I do believe when you walk in to a situation like Saban did at Bama, there is no bias for or against players, you are just looking at what you have and sometimes that is an advantage. I think it will take another 2 years to truly evaluate Miles as opposed to changing coaches. Case in point, look at what almost happened to Texas and a Heisman QB candidate almost lost a chance to play for a MNC. Blame Mack or McCoy, it almost caved in on them. So, based on that, even though I don't like losing a game we should have won, I'll let Les have another year or two and see what happens.

Yesterday on a national sports program, it was stated that at the end of the Texas Nebraska game, the clock management by both Coach Brown and QB McCoy stoping the clock with 1 second to go made Coach Miles look like Gen. Sherman!

quote:I vaguely remember the Cholly Mac era, but I don't remember him having a poor public persona. I certainly don't remember him being lambasted for his idiocy the way Miles has been. I think Miles has deserved that for this year and to a lesser degree last year just based on team performance and pitiful in game management. I don't think Mac had those problems.
poor public persona

I would say he is willing to change when pressured to do so. Otherwise he is pretty stubborn, and if he had it his way, most of our assistants would probably be from Oklahoma St. I do think he is pretty perceptive when there are rumblings that we need new coordinators, and he changes them accordingly. But only when pressured to do so.

Cholly Mac was a damn fine coach; the only place he could not get his proper due was Louisiana. I know that he did not beat the Bear, but no one else did either.

all miles needs is an oc and a good one, the defense will get there in time.He just needs to build. As far as mac goes he didnt let the fans down because we didnt expect that much from him,but boy his defense was great. I can still remember when al would come to br and bear would get on the radio and say things like i dont know how we can win against lsu
