CBB and the Charge call

It's no secret, one of LSU biggest foes this year has been offensive fouls. A big problem is the archaic way CBB views and calls offense fouls, specifically the charge. We are basically rewarding kids for not playing defense, but trying to create collisions. Last night I watched time and again Jaylin Williams looked to basically get in the way of the ballhandler. He never made attempts to try and dislodge the ball or block a shot.
The NBA has the calls right on this one. If you are simply standing your ground as a defender you will not create an offense foul unless the offensive player is out of control and uses force(shoulder, elbow, etc.) to move you. Otherwise it will just be a legal guarding position and no foul is called either way.
Because they view the stationary defender this way in the NBA, if they pick up on the slight movement from him its a defense foul. There is no reason to look for him to be set to potentially call a charge. In this way they discourage the practice of "just getting in the way". On the contrary, most offensive(player control fouls) in the NBA are called when the defender is active and continually beats his mark to the spot on the floor he is attempting to go.
The one I think is most telling last night is the foul on Eason after a quick backcourt turnover. Williams is not in any sort of guarding position due to the turnover, so he simply attempts to get in the way of Eason who has full momentum towards the basket. He slides under Eason and draws a charge. Not only would this not have been a foul in the NBA, it would have been a flagrant on Williams for not allowing the shooter to land.
TLDR version, abolish the charge in college basketball. It's what's best for the game.

Yes this rule will def be looked at and the wording of what a “ charge call “ is will be changed. Straight from director of officials of SEC.

It’s mostly just SEC refs. Watch other games and it isn’t nearly as bad.
It’s completely ruined the game. Jaylin Williams has had 10 charge calls for him in 2 games he’s played vs LSU. He should have barely played both games abs LSU would have honestly blown them out both times. To act like those calls don’t completely change the way a team plays or the outcome is downright stupid and shows ignorance

All I know is the 2 at the end of the 1st half, one on Eason and one on Pinson were horrible calls. In both cases, no matter how a "charge" is defined, Williams should have been called for blocking fouls.
That said, SEC refs are atrocious. Not just in LSU games, in most SEC games I've watched. They are just bad.

90% of the time a defender hits the floor it is a block.
90% of the time officials call a charge.
90% of the time officials call a charge.

100 percent agree, but if you make a stationary defender unable to take a charge when when the offensive player has his head up and is making a normal basketball play, then there isn't even a chance to call any of those a charge.

I understand why fans don’t want to blame the officials. I get it.
But J Williams should have fouled out or been forced to play a lot less minutes.
If people don’t think officiating cost us the game last night in a 1 point game I don’t know what to say.

Although Eason drifted slightly and barely made contact on his steal and short jumper, there should have been a no call on that play. Williams should have been called for a block on a drive by Pinson that was called a charge, he wasn't totally set.

I agree there are far too many charge calls in college ball.
And I said in an earlier post that I'd change the college charge rule to only apply to the on-ball defender. Got to eliminate help side defenders merely getting in the way and not actually playing defense.

Williams clearly moved forward under Tari. He couldn’t land without colliding.

Williams did foul out and before Eason did.
SEC needs to change how they call the charge foul.

Reid gets criticized game after game for leaning in, picking up fouls, when defending.
Williams of Arkansas does the same thing and gets praised for picking up charges.

I hated the way Williams always grinned from ear to ear every time he drew the charging call. I think our players deserve credit for not clocking him
And credit for continuing to play offensive in the lane. One of Musselman’s tactics is to get the opponent to get gun shy after a number of fouls are called. Williams probably won’t get away with so many calls in the tournament.

As undisciplined as our team is, I'm surprised they didn't "clock" him. It would have been par for the course.

Williams fouled out, at home. He obviously didn't get all the calls

quote:shhh, that's not in line with the "cheating refs" narrative.

And those cheating refs were so effective at their nefarious plot, that the team they were trying to screw was in the lead with 8 seconds left in the game. Cheating refs can't even cheat correctly, apparently. /sarc/

As I posted earlier, the refs just suck at their job.
It seems magnified sometimes but they have sucked almost every SEC game I've watched with or without LSU playing.
