I don't know if Miles is a better coach than Saban, but the OP asked who was the best LSU coach. And I'd say Miles is, based on the number of wins. Saban left too soon.

and Saban had much more that that, so what's your point? You guys trying to downplay what Saban did while at LSU is some homo BS! Like said if he had this kind of great talent before arriving like y'all claim, why didn't he win a NC? he inherited good to ok talent, but nowhere near the kind of talent y'all make it to be.

How is saying Miles is better, downplaying Saban? His legacy is what it is. It doesn't change what Saban did. No one in their right mind can say that Saban is better in light of what Miles has done at however. Saban did something great, which was rebuild the program and most of us are grateful for that. I don't see how in the hell someone can say Saban is a better coach, particularly considering their head/head record.

Yes. Fine. He finally gets the credit where credit is due. Just frustrates us b/c we want a perfect coach without a bad game EVAR!!!

There are very few LSU fans, or football fans for that matter, that would deny that Saban is one of the best coaches in the last 25 years. Only a fool would argue against that proposition.

Two Ncs at two different schools within the time frame that he accomplished both is nothing short of amazing. When he leaves Bama this year to go penn St., he may well get a third at three different schools.

This has NOTHING TO DO with the best coach at LSU.
You can give all the credit you want to Saban for Miles' success but that doesn't line up with the facts. Saban didn't leave the LSU without talent; Miles has taken that talent to a whole new level.

Some people are good at building things and some are good at taking what's there and making it bigger and better. That's how life works.

Lets look at it this way. Where has Les Miles ever failed as a head coach? Never failed.

Where has Saban ever failed as a head coach? Miami!!!

Where has Les Miles maintained a great program? LSU.

Where has Saban ever maintained a great program? He has yet to accomplish this yet.

Both created great programs. OSU for Miles and LSU for Satan.

Dietzel's resume is roughly equivalent to Saban's. Both are beginning to trail Miles - all he has to do is seal the deal with a conference and BCS championship and that ends the debate. He already has the wins.

Dieztel and Saban also share the fact that they left LSU when they didn't have to. Speaks to character and commitment. Les didn't leave when he ought to have (for his own personal fulfillment). That also speaks to his character and commitment - gives him bonus points, in my mind.

Again, you make solid points.

I, like so many others, was totally pissed when Dietzel left...it didn't make sense; it din't make sense until I saw the interview with Dietzel before the 2003 BCSCG. He was asked that question: Why did you leave when you had a championship caliber team? His answer was that he couldn't turn down the opportunity to coach at Army because he felt that it was his duty as a citizen to contribute to the country.

Might sound lame now, but we can't forget that he left right after the Korean war and only a little over a decade after WWII. I guess I have to assume he was telling the truth.

1961 was "right" after the Korean War? It was the Cold War and we weren't even smelling Vietnam, yet.

He took the job because it was his first assistant job, his last assistant job and he was the first non-graduate to be hired there. Those were selfish reasons, in my opinion - but I'm not going to denigrate his service.

I also give him some credit for realizing his mistake - coming back to LSU (as AD, an opportunity afforded by the need for someone with sufficient stature with the fans to "help Mac pack") and retiring in Baton Rouge. However, when the critical time came, he made, in my opinion, the wrong decision.

settle down...Les is the only LSU coach to inherit National Championship caliber players.

Nick built it. Therefore, he gets my vote for "greatest" ever. Harder to 'build' than to 'maintain'

And yes, Les has done an outstanding job. I would make him the highest paid in the nation. He's worth every cent.

Any how would you know this little factoid?

Not saying, I know either, but I would guess it's different for every coach. Look at Saban, obviously he is a genius when it comes to instantly reviving college football programs, but it seems he runs out of gas after about 4 years. Miles on the other hand is slow and steady.

He's certainly on track to be, but, you can't exactly grant him such a status until his tenure at LSU is over.

Believe it or not Saban wouldn't have had a shot in hell of winning the NC in 2007 with those players.

If he goes undefeated and wins the ship he will be the best without a doubt.

I think if you give Nick LSU and Miles Bama, give 'em two weeks to get ready, Bama beats LSU.

I heard this said about Bear Bryant, "He can take his'n and beat your'n, and your'n and beat his'n."

when you get to the talent of the SEC, and understand the number of talented players on EVERY team in the nation, it boils down to coaching, and recruiting the right position at the right time... it's all Miles, no doubt.

Arnsparger was pretty good, he didn't stay long. But Les has always been a good coach no matter what the Mauxrons say.

LSU built Saban. Of course I'm exaggerating but it is no different than saying Saban built LSU.
