Then we just disagree. Should is an obligation and it more than implies but one more correct or acceptable action. Could is an ability and empowerment to choose to take an action now, or not. It includes the ability to be selective on the if or the when of taking the action. Example: He could go now, but should stay one more year for the team.

If you're starting with the premise that the staff needs to convince as many underclassmen as possible to return instead of going to the NFL, then you're not dealing with reality and are only thinking about LSU's best interests. These players have to think first and foremost about what's best for their health and earning window.

It's a violent, brutal sport. Each year adds more punishment and wear and tear to their bodies. An average NFL career is comparatively short, maybe 3-plus years. If these guys are going to be picked in the first round, or they have likely topped out and don't stand a great chance to significantly upgrade their stock by returning but can be drafted, then they should go if they want to. If they're fairly close to finishing their degree, they can always do that later, if they want to.

When it comes to guys leaving early, that train left the station a long time ago. The focus needs to be on continuing to recruit balanced classes and strong talent, then developing that talent so that there are capable guys ready to step up and replace the guys who inevitably leave early, rather than asking guys to further subject their bodies to one more season of punishment without getting paid for it.

Are you thinking of someone else? Arden Key maybe? Hunter did not 'sandbag' his college career.

“And that furthers the notion that it is really ok for talented, even accomplished juniors, to leave early. I think the word “should” better applies to staying... like “juniors should stay on the team until they complete their eligibility”.“

College is transactional—a means to an end—whether you are an athlete or an engineer. In the case of the engineer, if you pull classes forward and graduate early you should certainly go seek your license and employment. No different for the athlete. If the league will pay you...go. It’s absolutely the right call if you project to stick on a team.

I think “should” is: “what should the player do if the goal is maximizing earning potential for a short career.”

So you are saying players are obligated to play for free as opposed to making millions of dollars basically because as a fan you think it’s best for your team. That’s pretty selfish of you

On the other hand, how many leave for the NFL then get cut and are left scrambling. Although LSU has a lot of successful in the NFL, there are just as many that left school and aren't playing.

I’m convinced Miles was encouraging them to leave early ‘to support their family ‘ as if someone’s life is going to be over if they play one more year of college ball.

No doubt . If he leaves early he is one year closer to the big contract . Wouldn’t blame him one bit , but I am selfish and really want him back next year . But I get the money / injury possibilities / other varaiables in the equation .

White and Greedy will go, and are probably the first players taken in their positions. Other guys need to stay, like Fulton... a few Dline, Magee, and Anderson (who should).
