Can Benefield play Star?

He was a menace in the 2nd half playing close to LOS. Made 2 of the biggest defensive plays of the game - 20 yard sack & the blitz that caused an INT.
Also had Chambliss on the 3rd down late in game whenever Trinidad impressively flicked the ball
I think him at Star and Jhase Thomas at FS is smart. Thomas can cover some ground. I hate Spears being out but was encouraged how we looked on those 3 aggressive defensive drives last week

I agree. Would much rather see Benefield at STAR

Woodland played a little star during the game. Might see a lot of nickel from here on out with 3 cbs and 2 safeties.

If they wanted Benefield at Star, he would have been there in the first place. He's way too valuable where he's at

He can cover a lot space in zones and is excellent around the LOS. But Woodland and Cooley are better in man coverage. You're going to see him used in zone coverages and at the LOS but is he going to play Star? Probably not just due to having 2 players who are more suited to cover receivers man-to-man.

Thats all under the premise that Spears is available....now that hes not....that may change things.
I dont know the answer obviously, but suggesting Benefield may CURRENTLY be the best option at star cant be discounted bc he was playing true safety. Im not sure what the answer is.

It doesn't. Ty is a free safety, you don't want him covering a slot, you recruited him to play FS, not Star. Even if he was SLIGHTLY better than Woodland at Star you would dramatically drop in talent at FS. It's a net negative. No, he is not moving to Star.

I think the best defense on the field is keeping Benefield where he is, moving Cooley into the star role, and Thomas at FS.
That worked exceptionally well in the second half. Benefield might be better than Cooley there, and Cooley might be better than Thomas at FS, but I think you lose more than you gain by taking Benefield off of a true safety position in base sets.
idk though. I'm sure we're going to run looks with Benefield down closer to the LOS now. It really just blows because Spears was perfect for that role. Only guys in recent memory that could play it better are probably Jamal Adams and Tyrann. Maybe Haulcey/Reid too, but the list is short.

I think he can be good somewhere on the field, but it's not at STAR. At least not this year.

Yeah, I'm glad he started making plays in the box and blitzing because he's terrible as a deep centerfield safety

Are you sure? I saw J Jackson make an interception so assumed they moved Woodland to star and Jackson replaced him…

if hes going to play safety at the next level then lsu probably promised him they would play him there in college and not mess up his draft stock

He is actually pretty darn good in zone coverages. He eliminated a decent amount of plays. Now he isn't asked to play man because he isn't strong in man coverage but saying he isn't good in coverage is misleading and incorrect.

It says a lot about Benefield that he'd probably be the best option at 3 different positions on the field. That's how good he is.
Star is the hardest position to fit with the right athlete and scheme knowledge. So, that says Benefield should take it. But, you have to see if that creates too big of a drop off at FS. I guess that's the big decision for Blake.
I suspect Jase Thomas will get more reps this week at star.
