Trust me, I can understand needing money, but if ya'll want the band to stay like it is (I know most people do), expect that stipend to be one of the first things to take a cut.

I realize that, I'll take a pay cut, but if the stipend is completely done away with, the band will shrink

Where's elleshoe or some other older/former Tigerbandsmen, they might be able to explain how everything works better than I can
I graduated in 1982, some 28 years ago, so I can't comment on how everything CURRENTLY works as far as the power structure and who funds what and who (athletics/music school/university) controls what. I do know that TGBFTL should be immune from any kind of reductions in size that would effect the sound and performance aspects. Unacceptable! Reduce the service awards to save money or cut a few woodwinds if necessary.
Since Frank is retired, there would have to be a DIRECTOR and ASSOCIATE/ASSISTANT director. No large college marching band can be run without at least two directors. Can't be done. Too much to be done for just one person. Roy King has been around LSU since the late 70's.(Was a clarinet player originally who transfered from U.S.M., but switched over to play in the drumline with TBA82 when we went Corps Style in 78) Except for his years as a high school band director in La, Ga and Fl, Roy has been loyal to LSU. Why would he be on the chopping block, since you have to have that second director minimum?.......

Roy ran practice one week this season completely by himself and the show came out just like it always does. The man is a sorcerer.

Because he's non tenured faculty. LSU is preparing itself to eliminate 1/3 of the professors/teachers/instructors.
They cant say we are going to eliminate all non tenured faculty except Roy because he's second in command of TB.
The main reason from what I was told was the loss of instructors for the music dept.
If you think this is bad wait till your english and biology courses in the Fall. Those depts are getting hammered.

So you're comment earlier had no reference in saying you don't care about the band being at football games?

wasn't that before the Washington game when LRM wasn't there? When we didn't have a game?

let's be honest here if the band were to be dropped attendance wouldn't drop off one bit.
hey I enjoy the band and everything and respect their tradition, but they aren't why anyone is there.
The fat has to be trimmed somewhere

Attendance might not drop, but a hell of a lot of people would be mighty pissed off. A marching band is a big part of the college football gameday experience, and LSU's is one of the best.

Lets not forget the president of TAF is a tiger band alumnus.

The band is as much a part of saturdays in the fall as football
Uhhhh, no.
Having said that, people obviously care about the band. I don't see any reason why the band itself can't raise enough money to offset the shortfall.
How much money are we talking about?

(sorry, that's just funny!)
I've said this before, and I believe it to be true: If it was up to the TAF/Athletic Department, they would reduce Tigerband to the smallest number possible, or eliminate it all together. Sure, people would get pissed, but after a couple years, nobody would really give a shite, save a small minority. TAF wants the seats. Rob Dowie was correct in his statement that it would be difficult to get those seats back in the future if TB is cut significantly.
If stipends were cut, I don't think it would reduce the band significantly. The only thing that would/could hurt would be the recruiting of 5* H.S. musicians (trust me...it's done--seriously). Band geeks are band geeks, and if we have an opportunity to pursue music in college, we will do it. The people will be there, $1000 or $1.

thus, because of laying off faculty and instructors the band cannot be the current size because of all the music majors.
Band members have already said they would give up their stipend but the issue is faculty cuts at LSU. If you have non tenured faculty, you're on the chopping block.

Nah what the..., that was Tulane week.
Don't mess with me, Steve.

Believe it or not, they're actually why Les Miles is there. But then again that's probably believable.

I have attended games where my decision was based on being able to hear the TGBFTL. So in my case attendance could be affected if I didn't give away my ticket.

there is also a strong rumor going around that Dr. Moorhouse may not be back at LSU next year. Then you'd be going into a season with all new directors....

Oh man....not good at all. When they talk about reducing the size of the band, how many members would be lost? Currently, LSU has one of the best, if not the best, band in the SEC. I'd hate to see it go the way of Florida's band. They are a mess for such a large school.
