Thank you DJ and Schimpf for the insurance runs. Saved Coleman's arm a little. He would have pitched the 9th.

No doubt. Saved Coleman and got Ott some work in a less pressured situation. It really could not have worked out any better.

My friends were talking, but I thought I heard Erin Andrews say that Mainieri would possibly bring Coleman back out for 9th with a one run lead. (She was in the dugout asking the coaches questions throughout the game)

Now that would have been an interesting decision.

Yea, she said it was up to Grewe. He went down to watch Ott warm up and if he didn't like how he was throwing, they were going to send Coleman back out.

IMO, this is where you pull that move, not UGA middle of the season.

No!

You pull it at UGA mid season so it's not an "oh, shite, we're doing something we've never done before" moment for your players in the NCAA tournament.

Bertman was legend for this - and Mainieri does it too.... make what appears to be some whacko moves in mid season that pay HUGE dividends in Omaha.

The number of times this has happened is uncanny.

The trade-off is 15 pitches vs. an entire game on your staff in the loser's bracket.

Best analysis.

It was a brilliant move.

Coleman is our best pitcher and it is critical to avoid the loser's bracket. You have to pull out all of the stops. He only threw 15 pitches, so he will be available for a full start on Monday with the day of rest. Given the game situation and the off day upcoming, it was an inspired move.

I do think it would have been a mistake to put him in the 9th because then the outing would be so longas to prevent getting a full start from Coleman on Monday, and that game is pretty big as well. and I have faith in Ott to get three outs. Luckily, we didn't have to reach that point.

Mainieri treated this game as a must win, which is what you have to do to win.

I watched some of the Press Conference and it sounded like Coleman pitching the 8th was always in the game plan. Even prior to Ranaudo struggling and needing to piece together the rest of the game..

It was obviously a great coaching move and something you won't see too many other coaches even think about doing.

Shocker...our coach knows more about his players than the rantards...who knew.

This is how Coleman was used a lot last year when we didn't have Ott...pitch some on Friday to help close out a game, then start on Sunday. The coach knows that Coleman has that ability. That is why Ranaudo started yesterday. Ranaudo would never have done what Coleman did last night.

I doubt that. I was thinking this would be the strategy after we took the lead in the 5th. It's not rocket science. I think many coaches would do the same thing if they were coaching our specific pitching staff. Who else would you really feel comfortable in the 8th to get us to Ott? Bradshaw maybe? Naw..not really huh. It had to be Coleman.

The mark of a very good manager/HC.

Manieri should be gainning some converts this year with the way he has handled this club.

Of course there will allways be those who just have to hate on the HC, regardless.

I don't know where you got this from. He only started 3 games last year and they were all early in the season when they were figuring out a rotation)...by conference play he was exclusively a reliever.
